What I read is that Wistron didn’t have a good strategy getting in India, and that cost them Apple’s business.

Didn't they also have some issues with payments and working conditions for their factory employees?

Wistron has has a rough history, including underpaying/withholding pay from employees[1]. Good riddance.

Flagship customers often do this to vendors. They know that "Apple is our customer" is a big selling point, so they turn the screws tight and make the vendor serve them for no margin.

Yes, iPhones are also manufactured in Brazil and India. This is largely due to trade barriers in those countries.
