Realistically this is what Utah wants. Only 60% of Utah residents are Mormon, but 85%+ of their elected state representatives and senators are Mormon. They are happy to force the rest of society to carve out a space "just for them", which is pretty much in line with their entire history anyway.

There are conspiracy theories that this is actually all about “anti Mormon” content on Reddit (and apparently it’s big on TikTok?) It’s a conspiracy that I could probably buy into.

Thanks for appropriately labeling this a conspiracy theory. As a Mormon in Utah I find this absurd, but conversations on Mormonism online are pretty tricky, so you come to expect absurd claims like that.

I support this law on its face, but I also don't have an issue with laws like this keeping those that might not successfully integrate into the existing culture of Utah from moving here. I imagine there are others that probably think like me.

Note: You can get married at 16 in Utah. So you can be married but still too young to consume pornography.

As long as the average age of all of your wives is above 18 it's ok, right? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Joseph_Smith%27s_wives

Only 1% of Utah practices polygamy while the Majority of Utahans are Mormon.

Interesting to find out that Utah DOESN'T have the kind of child marriage that places like West Virginia have been in the news recently for defending.

It's not interesting if you are at all familiar with Mormons. The problem is people are only familiar with us from Under The Banner of Heaven saying we're all violent extremists or countless reality TV shows painting us all as polygamist.

what are all these highest-per-capita consumers of pr0n going to do? hahahaha

That's a myth based on a single very flawed study that's 15 years old. Every study since then has Utah in close to last place for porn consumption per capita.

The only time I've been asked for an ID at a pharmacy was for non-prescription sudafed. I've picked up many prescriptions for myself and my family, and they have never asked for ID.

Same, I pick up prescriptions for myself, my kids, and my wife, all the time. I can't recall ever being ID'd, and I'm certainly I'm not usually asked for ID. Maybe it varies state-by-state?

It depends on the drug (and maybe the state).

I have to show ID for a couple of prescriptions I have, and my understanding is that it then goes into some kind of database that gets cross-referenced between pharmacies to make sure that I don't have multiple prescriptions at multiple pharmacies.

I think that came about as part of the opioid crisis, because some people would have 5 different doctors write prescriptions for the same meds to 5 different pharmacies. No one had a way to detect that someone was getting 5 oxycontin prescriptions.

I stand corrected, thank you: https://www.deseret.com/2023/5/2/23708030/utah-pornography-u...

The ol' "if you have nothing to hide" argument was flawed a century ago and it isn't getting any less wrong. Recognize that "age verification" is 100% about taking control out of individual hands and into the government's. The only reason we do this with alcohol is because of health and safety risks. Please tell me how boobies threaten the fabric of society?

Boobies are great, useful, and oftentimes beautiful. Yes, the US can be a bit puritanical but porn is hardly just boobies. Premature exposure to sexual content is thought to be deleterious to a developing brain. Sure, kids mature at different rates but what should be formative years might instead be spent in navel gazing porn addiction which can lead to developing a taste for evermore strange, fringe, and or violent…

Kids have had access to porn on the internet for at least 25 years now. I don't know how harmful that has been but the premise that this is somehow a new situation is pretty absurd.

> Why aren't parents doing basic things like setting up content filters? Not a comment on the policy; I'm a parent and AFAICT none of my cohorts in town know how to do this.

My son runs a vpn to get around my dns enforced fillers. I’ve tried to block vpns but he still finds a way.

Getting around network restrictions started my software engineering career. You had to learn all about TCP/IP, transparent proxies, SSH tunnels, DNS, Linux boxes, /etc/passwd, /etc/shadow, John The Ripper, write Perl scripts, cron jobs, CGI, how automate things and become the ghost in the machine. Best educational tool ever for kids.

>What's wrong with these people? someone told me once "Think of the US less like a secular Western European country and more like a very rich Iran" and that really does help to make sense of a lot of these decisions

More correct and less inflammatory version: "Think of the US less like a single (European) country and more like a collection of countries (states) representing various different cultures, some of which have widely divergent or more conservative values."

Single European countries can have extreme differences in culture and politics as well. Go visit Berlin and rural Saxony in Germany and you'll feel like San Francisco and Mississippi culture wise.
