When you use the word "extremely", what kind of incidence are you referring to? If someone says "water is extremely common in the solar system", I'd expect maybe two in three planets to have it. Half at minimum.

More than half of divorce cases in the US mention compulsive pornography usage: https://s3.amazonaws.com/thf_media/2010/pdf/ManningTST.pdf

... I gotta say, that's a surprisingly good comeback. One would have to dive into the stats on how many people get married in the first place and then divorce (iirc the latter is about a third? At least in my country) and then halve that rate, so it's not going to be an "extremely" by any definition I think, but I do better see your point.

Makes me think about gambling. Most people either don't do any or do it in normal proportions. For those that do have trouble, as this argument is about addiction after all, there's a self-imposed timeout mechanism that gets centrally registered so that any gambling place will enforce the timeout on this person. I don't know how much it helps, and it also goes into having to identify users to avoid circumventing even a self-imposed safeguard, but it might be an industry to compare against and draw research from (I haven't seen it mentioned yet in the greater thread).

It more or less is? It's extremely inexpensive.

Lottery tickets are extremely inexpensive. But what do you think would happen to consumption of lotto tickets if they went from $3 to free, especially in a frictionless environment where you can just download them?

Lottery tickets are substantially more expensive than sugar. And if lotto tickets were free, (1) there would be no harm in consuming them and (2) you would also win $0, and no one would buy them.

How about: If you don't want your kids to see it, that's on you. Either accept that you are a shitty parent who can't raise children to your satisfaction, or get better at parenting. Don't force consequences on me just because you are incompetent.

We don't apply this principle to something like peanut allergies. "If your kid touches a peanut, that's on you as a parent"? No, people recognized that peanuts are harmful enough to a certain segment of the population that it's worth making changes, even changes that might inconvenience others. Besides, I'm not sure why you think that parents are able to be 100% in control of things that their children see/eat/etc. S…

Yes and forcing people to show ID has really stopped underaged drinking and making drugs illegal have stopped people from smoking weed.

Multiple issues with this. It starts off with arbitrary definitions of what pornography is ( https://le.utah.gov/~2023/bills/static/SB0287.html ): "nipple of the female breast" You can suck on it when you are a baby, but god forbid you ever take a look at it again before you are married. What's wrong with these people? Even public nudity laws differ from city to city (e.g. in California), so clearly, people aren't al…

Way to regurgitate a tired argument. Kids are addicted to porn before they’re old enough to drive these days and it’s messes them up for life (see: the incel movement.) Something has to be done about corporations that profit off of showing literal children hardcore porn. “Talking to your kids” doesn’t work when multinational corporations are incentivized to addict them for ad revenue.

What evidence do you have that the incel movement is driven by pornography? I always attributed it to the recruitment efforts of the alt-right and other misogynistic groups.

Where are you based? I can purchase alcohol from Amazon UK with no obvious age checks. Deliveroo require that riders verify your age but in reality they just ask you to type it in. And the major grocery stores deliver alcohol without any obvious checking too. I imagine teenage drinking is much easier these days thanks to the above :)

But God forbid you try to buy a kitchen knife! It used to be that you had to show ID at delivery, but now Amazon requires adding ID before the purchase.

Not in my state (CA). I had kitchen knives delivered by Amazon with no additional checks/verification.

>What's wrong with these people? someone told me once "Think of the US less like a secular Western European country and more like a very rich Iran" and that really does help to make sense of a lot of these decisions

When's the last time the US publicly executed a homosexual person or adulterer, with or without trial?

Not execute. But there were laws against “sodomy” - ie consensual non heterosexual sex between adults in some southern states as late as the 80s and people went to jail.

I'm not really a fan of the solution (something more along the lines of the v-chip where commercial sites in the US are required to identify their content categories in a standard way so browsers could be configured to block it seems like a better solution), and sites like pornhub are straightforward enough to include in blocking software, but currently sites like Reddit present a problem. Looking at recent dumps[0],…

There's also the problem that lots is highly viewed NSFW content on Reddit isn't porn. Check out r/AskReddit. There are questions about how people feel about death that are marked NSFW for reasons I can't understand.

Reddit has an account setting to hide NSFW-marked content from your feed and search results, so people will mark “distressing” content NSFW as a crude opt-in.

Mandatory reminder that the US covers more land area than the entire EU. And while the population is 185 million people smaller, think about how wildly different the various EU countries are culturally. While the US has something of a shared culture, the South has a wildly different culture than New York. It's OK for Germany and France to say that the politics of Hungary and Poland shouldn't represent them, and vice…

My experience living in North Carolina, Texas, New York, and California gives me the picture that this is an exaggeration. Imho, the difference is somewhat like that between a northern town near Newcastle and Covent Garden.

Most nations have regional differences in the realm of the US. Yes, a town like Alba in Texas isn't like NYC culturally or physically, but many countries have this difference.

I suspect that of the many that I have lived in or visited, the only ones with apparent uniformity are ones I haven't really seen deeply: Iceland and Norway perhaps.

My friend likes to refer to the US as a "third world country with a Gucci belt" and sadly I don't think this too far off.

Yea go tell that to someone actually living in a third world country. How out of touch and spoiled can you be?

go to any impoverished town or neighborhood in any part of the USA and see for yourself: the running water is undrinkable, the food will slowly kill you, education is severely lacking, etc.

Extremely inexpensive is infinitely expensive when you're a 13 year old with 2 dollars to your name.

It does not need to be literally the same thing to be a useful point of comparison, which is the nitpick argument bumby was making.
