He died in a training flight accident when he was only 34. I would still call it "untimely".

#6Despite the Cold War and the Space Race being in full force I like many in the West was shocked and upset to hear of his tragic death. Gagarin was not only a hero of the Soviet Union but for many across the world.

#9I love that he name checks and quotes Chkalov. Not that I expect anyone to know who Chkalov was, but there's a Chkalov Drive in Vancouver WA, and I went down the "how do I pronounce that, who is it named for" rabbit hole a few years ago, so his name always makes me smile. The Vantucky locals typically say Chuckalov or similar, and look blankly at anything close to ˈtɕkaləf

Thank-you for sharing that. I had not realized he would survive the mission in the article, only to ultimately pass so young.
