I completely disagree. I'm building a business, and this business will be based on excellent software and excellent support for that software. I will refuse to use AI. But instead of AI users taking my job, I'm sure that refusing to use AI will become my differentiator as every AI user becomes more and more like each other. You may think that good AI users will not become so bland, but they will. Human laziness will…

I understand your stance on the use of artificial intelligence and how you hope to differentiate yourself from AI users by focusing on excellent software and support.

However, AI has the potential to enhance efficiency and accuracy in many cases, which can be beneficial for both the company and the customer. Being able to adapt to emerging technologies is a key component of business success, and completely rejecting AI may limit your ability to compete in the future. Of course, the implementation of AI should be strategic and balanced with the need for personalized human touch

This is a more extreme take than I would make, but I largely agree. I think the real-world capabilities of current AI are vastly overestimated. Are there areas where it will create new possibilities? Absolutely. Will it make some workflows faster? Yeah, probably. Will it make software development faster? Maybe the really common stuff that "generic". I think in reality we'll see small marginal gains in a slightly better autocorrect for all but the most basic of CRUD and web dev. I just haven't seen the level of correctness and higher order understanding that's necessary for real software engineering. I keep seeing people saying they use it to generate tests, but are they also using it to generate the code under test? I'd be highly concerned with people relying on a tool that is inherently unreliable to do the majority of work. Human brains are bad interpreters, but AI is an even worse one. Maybe it will get there eventually, but I don't think GPT3/4 is it.

As AI perfects mimicking human output, the line between human and AI-generated content becomes irrelevant. Once "organic" content is trendy, the market will flood with cheap fakes. Good luck with your "differentiator" in a sea of indistinguishable content.

This is like saying tractors won't steal agricultural hand-ploughing jobs, the people building the tractors will. Technically true. But... stupid.

It's the people driving the tractors who take jobs, not the ones building them. If you operate a hand-plough for a living when tractors come on the scene, you'd better learn how to drive a tractor. The same is true of AI.

How often are calculators confidently wrong?

As a math teacher, this is such a funny comparison to keep reading. Yes, there's a difference between a deterministic outcome and a non-deterministic one. But throw humans into the loop, and it becomes more interesting. I can't count the number of times I've listened to someone argue their answer must be right because they got it from the calculator. And it's not just students; as a teacher I've always paid attention…

You’re an inspiration. I’m going to open an accounting firm and refuse to use calculators.

How often are calculators confidently wrong?

This is the thing. ChatGPT shouldn't be that confident in its wording IMO.. If it just said "according to me" instead of stating things as fact, people would have much less problems with it.

We know this wording is just show but people still get swayed by it and believe it must be true.

Depends on the calculator. Floating point imprecision is well documented.

That's true. But we know exactly why it can't do it.

> I can't count the number of times I've listened to someone argue their answer must be right because they got it from the calculator. Answers from calculators are always right! But the human may have asked the wrong question.

"Instead of using a motor vehicle, I will deliver all packages by hand" I mean, yea, in places it would succeed as a boutique business, but you're not building the next Amazon that way either.

Meanwhile Amazon actually operates by people walking to pickup and deliver most packages by hand to be boxed up.

People can actually get a lot of work done in an hour to the point where many things that don’t seem like they should scale end up being trivial expenses.
