this is a weirdly incompetent attempt. if you’re gonna go to the effort of making x different accounts to promote a post, why not go to the slight extra effort of giving them even remotely convincing comments?

It happens surprisingly often, just like this. I think it's usually people who are coming from so far outside the community that they have no idea of its conventions. Weird spam or SEO tricks sometimes seem to be in the mix too.
