This is the first time I've heard of Maria Lvova-Belova. I'm aware of the forced deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia. Can someone shed light on her role in this (other than her title of Commissioner of Children's Rights) and why she's being singled out?

In this meeting with Putin, Maria Lvova-Belova personally thanks him for adopting a child from Mariupol.

Ok so we want to be careful about not offending the ultra-nationalist expansionist guy...because the next guy might be an ultra-nationalist expansionist? IMO, that still means you reduced the world by one ultra-nationalist expansionist who had sufficient connections and charisma to get into power. And that's still a win, even if there's still more of them out there.

> Ok so we want to be careful about not offending the ultra-nationalist expansionist guy...because the next guy might be an ultra-nationalist expansionist? That's not what I said. We shouldn't do any appeasement whatsoever. Just pointing out to the fact that if someone overthrows Putin, it's not necessarily going to be a guy who thinks that the war in Ukraine is stupid.

Nope, not necessarily. And not necessarily someone who thinks it is stupid.

I'll take a dice roll at a new devil. We know the current one is pretty bad and isn't likely to improve on his own.

As a theoretical exercise, does anyone know what the punishment for these crimes would be? Of course we'll never see a trial, but I'm just curious, if it were to happen in some parallel universe, what would they get? A couple years in jail? Life?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trial_of_Radovan_Karad%C5%BEi%... delivered life in prison.

It would be a shame if Putin decided to follow Washington's lead and simply criminalize the ICC itself [1]. Yes, were Putin to wash up at Plymouth Rock, it would be a federal crime for any LEO to comply with the ICC and arrest him. Not that that would stop them, but it's funny to consider. It's extra hilarious that you actually posted the link which proves everything you said is false. Putin isn't an American service member and neither an American in general. He can't be 'extradited' if he wasn't here in the first place, and the article also states:

> Additionally, the act does not prohibit the U.S. from assisting in the search and capture of foreign nationals wanted for prosecution by the ICC

Why are all posts related to Russia's war on Ukraine always immediately astroturfed to death by pro-Putin bots?

There's a certain set of HN readers who think it's off-topic and likely to result in flamewars, and so flag political content off the front page.

A completely meaningless and symbolic gesture. I don't think Putin is in a hurry to surrender himself to the ICC, and nobody is going to arrest him overseas, because as a head of state he has a total diplomatic immunity. Full disclosure: I'm fully in support of Ukraine in this Russian-expansionist war. However this is just a cold hard fact. Me pointing it out in no way whatsoever even suggests that I'm pro-russian. > Appealing the Pre-Trial Chamber’s decision last year, lawyers for Jordan argued that because al-Bashir was a head of state at the time of his visit he was immune from arrest. But in its recent ruling, ICC judges concluded “there is no Head of State immunity under customary international law vis-a-vis an international court.”

Diplomatic immunity is absolute. Even committing war crimes doesn't rescind it. His diplomatic immunity will lapse once he's no longer the head of state however. EDIT: Pretty sure that they are personas-non-grata in each other's country at this point, which is a specifically described scenario in the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. So no, of course Zelensky couldn't enter Russia and expect nothing to happe…

Oh so Zelensky could just travel to Moscow? And nothing would happen to him? Since he has diplomatic immunity as the president of Ukraine? Whatever your answer will be, replace "Zelensky" in it with "Putin" and see if you would still stand behind it.

I think that the GP means something like https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indictment_and_arrest_of_Augus... He had no arrest warrants by the ICC, but he had a few open causes in a few countries that were ... dismissed by the British government.

Yeah, but he could be tried for war crimes, which might get him the death penalty in the US.

It requires the receiving country to accept it, which in practical terms means that there are few countries where he could go.
