That's two examples in one day of GPT being bad at scansion.

Q: What are the syllables in the word President?

ChatGPT: The syllables in the word "President" are "pre-si-dent", with stress on the second syllable "si".

So it does know about the nessesary concepts. It can also explain scanision. It just isn't good at putting that into practise. I guess this is one example to show that GPT isn't an AGI, as much as some want it to be.

Still 100x better than the average person!

I'm sure you've measured this.

I'm sure you know that one of the uses of intelligence is the ability to estimate things without measuring them - based on your actual experience and the quality of the model of the world that you have. Thankfully we can use it to know how to e.g. tie our shoes (without having formally studied knots), or to be able to tell intuitively that most people can't understand Quantum Mechanics, even if we haven't measured it.

You are however welcome to do some statistics with actual samples of talking to people and having them show their skills at scansion, and prove my estimation wrong. Heck, I'm willing to bet less than 1 in 100 Americans is able to even define what "iambic pentameter" is. Feel free to prove me wrong on that one too.

Except if your concern is the measurability of the skill: whether it's 100x and not just 10x or maybe just 8.345x better. In which case you've missed the point of using it as a stand-in for "much better".

Construct a limerick starting with "Employee who was from Nantucket" announcing to the employee that they are laid off.

"An employee who was from Nantucket,

Whose work seemed like a bucket,

We regret to relay,

On this unfortunate day,

You're laid off, so kindly chuck it."

Not sure about the second line, but I like the last line energy.

write a layoff announcement for a high-tech firm in a sentence where each word has to begin with the next letter in the alphabet from A to Z, without repeating any letters:

Availing benefits couldn't deter each faithful, grateful, hardworking individual just keeping loyal, managing noteworthy objectives, perhaps quantifying results seems to undermine valuable work, x-raying yearly zeal.

> That’s because AI is writing them! The first entry here is the proof! It would be nice if you presented some qualitative analysis to go with... any of this. As-is, this is just AI generated text with a preface saying "draw your own conclusions!" and my conclusions are "wow neither AI nor humans are good at writing layoff letters".

someone else with no sense of humor.

Personal foul, 20 yard penalty. Play will resume at the previous quotation and proceed until someone remembers wise old Steve's words...

Very good, but AFAIK there's no such thing as a "20 yard penalty."

write a layoff announcement for a high-tech firm in the style of a bonjovi song

Verse 1: Our high-tech firm is a place where we've called home, With teams of skilled employees, we've never been alone, But today, it's time to face a tough decision, We must say goodbye, it's not our intention.

Chorus: We're living on a prayer, As we announce the layoff that we'll share, It's not easy, we know, But we've got to let some employees go.

Verse 2: We've faced tough times before, and we've pulled through, But this time, we need to make some changes, it's true, The industry is shifting, and we must adapt, To stay ahead of the game and keep our market share intact.

Chorus: We're living on a prayer, As we announce the layoff that we'll share, It's not easy, we know, But we've got to let some employees go.

Bridge: To our impacted employees, we want to say, We appreciate all that you've done, day after day, You've been an integral part of our team, And we wish you well in all your future dreams.

Chorus: We're living on a prayer, As we announce the layoff that we'll share, It's not easy, we know, But we've got to let some employees go.

Outro: We're committed to our mission and our goals, And we'll continue to innovate, as we've always known, We thank you for your hard work, passion, and drive, And we'll keep on rocking, as we all strive.

My friend always says (roughly): AI replacing a job is not proof that the AI is sentient, it's proof that that job didn't require sentience. This seems like an example of that.

In HNball, the field is 1,000 yards long (at least until SVB finds out about the stadium).

That is better in just about every way than the corporate crap I’ve been reading the last six months or so.
