I don't know about Hetzner but my experience with OVH on dedicated servers and failures is like this: they detect when the server is down, mainly when it's off or doesn't ping, and then they try to boot on their debug distribution and perform some checks on the machine. They don't monitor other health issues however (how would they since you are running your own system?) and therefore don't do anything before they de…

I don't think this is accurate. I have rented an OVH dedicated server (through SoYouStart) for about the last decade, let me share some maintenance experiences: > They don't monitor other health issues however (how would they since you are running your own system?) and therefore don't do anything before they detect a "down" status. My server has a hardware raid card. I have had one incident where OVH contacted me and…

What you describe are hardware failures, and as I said they detect hardware failures. When the server goes down, they are on it by themselves.

But somes issues are not failures and you have to work on them on your side.

Most of the time the raid is software nowadays for example.

IPv6 works fine for my many servers at OVH.

While I like Hetzner a lot and can share your recommendations, I just don't see how it compares to full-blown cloud providers like AWS, GCP or Azure. It's a common misconception to put them at the same level when the offering is completely different. Nobody seriously uses AWS/GCP/Azure to have a couple VMs or dedicated servers alone. If someone can run their full workload in e.g. Hetzner without much hassle then they…

>"Nobody seriously uses AWS/GCP/Azure to have a couple VMs or dedicated servers alone" It actually does happen. They build some software, deploy it on VM and have said software use cloudy database service that removes a headache of maintaining backups, standby, point in time recovery, secure data at rest. I have couple of shell scripts that do all of that and use Hetzner but I can imaging some org with enough money t…

Time to start charging corporations to use your shell scripts I guess

They already pay for the cloud and someone to manage their cloud stuff I bet they would shell out half that if you offered your scripts.

I think that just shows how nonsensical these cloud providers really are when you can just write some scripts to handle it

I've been using Hetzner servers for ~15 years with multiple clients and employers, and always been disappointed with other providers compared to what Hetzner delivers. OVH with their frequent network level outages, the 2021 fire and so on. DigitalOcean with their way too frequent and long lasting maintenance windows. And AWS/GCP/Azure with their obscene pricing, ridiculous SLA and occasional hour-lasting outages. One…

We use Hetzner but I also had good experience with Scaleway (another French cloud provider).

Hetzner is German.

In my experience support will gaslight you into thinking it is your problem. I had a Hetzner server that was shutting off at random hours several times per week. I showed them the sudden loss of power events in the logs. "It must be a problem with your OS modifications that we don't support". OK, I wiped the machine to the stock image that you provide and it's still having power loss events. "Sure, we'll run a stress…

I am not much of a conspiracy theorist, but after going to the Hetzner site to look at my support history I was presented with this: https://i.imgur.com/3DKc9OC.png I have never seen this page before when trying to login. Make of that what you will.

To be honest, that's a incredulous leap in logic: Assuming someone from Hetzner is just name searching their brand, found your comment, looked up your account, and then "blocked" your client.

That's some dedicated client response team if so!

Too bad the entry-level offers still have such small SSDs. My EX41 from 2017(!) has SSDs that size. It’s high time to up the minimum size. I don’t need 64 GiB of RAM or a gazillion CPU cores or whatever, I just need reasonably-sized (1 TB+) storage. Not HDDs, but SSDs.

they allow to add ssd at extra cost.

With AWS - failure means the instance is automatically retired, and your ASG causes a new instance to automatically be created and put in service without you having to do anything. With hetzner - failure means your monitoring detected disk failure, sent you a pagerduty alert, which you then have to check the alert, figure out what has failed, and send in a support ticket to get the disk replaced. This will take a cou…

You're, In my real world experience their reliability beats out AWS reliability by a massive margin. On AWS, something is constantly breaking. One of the 100s of services will always have performance issues, degraded availability or some other crap going on. On Hetzner, the hard drive, CPU or RAM on one of the machines will die once every few years. Maybe. (This changes as your service grows and scales out, but there…

Neither of your anecdotes match my own personal experiences - so I'm sure the general truth is somewhere in between.

I've been responsible for millions of dollars of AWS spend over the last decade. I've had virtually zero AWS caused downtime in that period outside of the few major outages that affected the whole world (for example that major S3 outage) - but the "100s of services will always have performance issues or degraded availability" has literally never been true for me. I've had hundreds of instances be retired - but that is all automated and without downtime.

Over the last 18 months at my current company, we've had 100% uptime - there has not been a single AWS incident that has affected us in us-east-2. And since we're using ECS and fargate, we've also not had to worry about instance retirement.

On the other hand - I've also had numerous personal servers with hetzner over the years - and the hardware is _old_. I've had at least 3 hard drives go bad over the last ~8 years.

Again, I still strongly recommend hetzner for many cases - but I just think it's important to go in understanding the difference in responsibility for things like hardware level monitoring.

Another good low cost provider to consider is WholeSaleInternet.net. Their datacenter is located in Kansas City. I've been colocating and renting dedicated servers through them for since 2005. Servers start at $9 per-month. A comparable example: Dual Xeons - 36 cores / 72 threads - 128GB memory - dual 1TB nvme - 5 IP's $80 per-month $0 setup. Setup with dual 2Tb nvme is $100 per-month. I'm colocating a couple of serv…

I checked with them and they said they only do full rack colo and perhaps you are going through a reseller. Is that the case and if so can you provide details? I'm interested.

Wow. 16 threads, 64 GB RAM and 2 TB NVME SSD will make a fantastic Postgres/Mongo node for a fraction of managed solutions cost.

you lose fault tolerance which one of the hard parts of running postgres.

Just spin up three of these babies.
