I've worked for at least 3 companies using cloud services that could have hosted what they were doing on a handful of boxes for a fraction of the cost. (The most egregious was a system peaking at maybe 5 hits a second during the month-end busy period living in multiple pods on a GCP Kubernetes cluster.)

Until infrastructure fails, for an enormous number of possible reasons. I've seen it happen over and over.

Not if you're running game servers; those require plain UDP (sometimes TCP) proxying and CF only offers that on the enterprise plan afaik.

I'm not sure if this is the enterprise plan, but it is designed for proxying game servers and preventing ddos like steam's newer networking:

If I search my emails: "EC2 has detected degradation of the underlying hardware hosting your Amazon EC2 instance" It's just something you have to do yourself with Hetzner.

You should compare EC2 with Hetzner Cloud. Hetzner Cloud do send such alerts occasionally.

When these guys open up dedicated servers in a USA region it's going to be huge. Unfortunately, at the moment only the cloud offering is available in the USA so you're stuck with a bit of latency round tripping to the EU.

That's exactly what I'm waiting for too. I'll be snagging at least one once it's available.

Yeah, turns out that if you write code for constant intermittent failures, it'll run well for rare intermittent failures of Hetzner machines too.

With AWS - failure means the instance is automatically retired, and your ASG causes a new instance to automatically be created and put in service without you having to do anything. With hetzner - failure means your monitoring detected disk failure, sent you a pagerduty alert, which you then have to check the alert, figure out what has failed, and send in a support ticket to get the disk replaced. That’s if you use their dedicated servers. They have Hetzner Cloud which does the above as well.

You must be really lucky then :) My experience from ~2006 to 2014/15 (on and off, different companies, many different servers) was mostly bad, literal "you get what you pay for", with disks in dedicated servers dying left and right. I've only become a customer again since their vps cloud offering and I've actually been recommending that because it has been flawless for me for years.

No but i get it, but i had a lot of failures in general with spinning disks. I think it has to do that SSDs and NVMEs are much better at telling you how much juice they got left in them. I don't neccesairily think its a problem of hetzner alone though, as disks on other hosters have failed too for me.

I also used to maintain a couple of "plain old offices" and Hard disk failure is sadly just all around us, when you are using bare metal.

Another reason for kubernetes!

Not sure what time frame we're talking here but I don't even remember there being any choice of disk.

Disk choices have been a thing for a very long time. You can see the options when you scroll down in the configurator. [1] On top of that, Hetzner offers custom builds, so if you have specific needs you can get specific builds. Just not through the point-and-click interface.

Lightsail lacks any VPC or Security Group controls - these are typically the first things I miss when using plain servers at a VPS provider.
