LOL, nope. Not interested in taking another spin on the “privatize gain, socialize loss” merry-go-round. The banks had to be saved in 2008 because they were, like, the financial system. I don’t see why private companies and funds that are much less integral to the functioning of the economy as a whole should be saved by the public fisc. Sorry about your disruption.

I am leaning libertarian and I am very sympathetic to this point of view. However, with the amount of taxes these companies pay and the economic growth they generate, they have every right to ask the question: when does the government benefit us ? If this very costly government is not able to guarantee the integrity of its federal reserve notes deposits, then what is its purpose? What makes it legitimate?

> when does the government benefit us?

literally all the time, the entire country is shaped around the benefit of corporate interests and capitalism

What would I gain as a taxpayer in return for this bailout? Would the taxpayer receive 10% equity in YC? It seems like YC could have insured these funds, but didn’t. They saved money and accepted the risk. This risk is now realized. Seems bizarre that YC would be made whole. Certainly it saves jobs, but it benefits YC more than anyone else.

These are deposits at a bank. We're advocating for protection of 37,000 small business accounts, a small number of which are YC. We discovered about 30% of YC companies would not be able to make payroll even after the $250,000 insured amount if they were to wait months for their payments. That is detailed on the FDIC website currently as the process for remediation. This petition represents the lived experience of th…

I like how you explained that in the note. But my question stands. What do I get for bailing out those 37,000 small business holders?

It also seems odd that all 37k didn’t insure against bank collapse. That seems like systemic risk that they all took on.

I’m sure DC is aware of this problem. The issue is what to do.

It seems more fair to request that the government invest in these companies and in exchange for government cash, equity is given out. Or something of value. Otherwise it seems like the taxpayer is just covering the losses of lots of small business owners choosing to save money by taking on too much risk.

VC backed founder here whose company is impacted by this. “Nepotistic trust fund baby” I am not. My family has no money, no connections. I went to Portland State University. I had no VC connections whatsoever. Our company was originally bootstrapped off of personal savings accumulated by working and living way below our means. No friends or family invested or gave us loans. I’ve had no inheritance and expect none. We…

Did you have more than $250k sitting in SVB? We're you unaware of the $250k FDIC insured limit? Or were you, and didn't act on mitigating this potential problem? Any particular reason?

Yes, I was aware. I don’t think there’s a moral imperative to help us, necessarily. I would only ask that tech depositors not be treated differently due to the schadenfreude I see in this thread.

Consider companies small enough to have no one whose job it is to do finance. As a founder you’re already working long hours and bank failure is not a risk that is top of mind compared to lack of product market fit.

He was targeting VCs, not founders. I’m sorry you’re going through this though.

He was implying that depositors should be treated in a specific way because of the assumptions he makes about who they are.

With all respect, Garry: YC is to blame for the consolidation of this risk in a single counterparty. Those who led all these entities from the same industry to bank at the same place must be held accountable too.

This isn't some sort of complex bid call option strategy. This is a checking account, and one choice out of many that founders make regularly. To my knowledge SVB was never required, and startups always had choice.

Requirements aren't the only way to steer someone to a product. Google pays Apple billions to be the default search engine on iOS.

Nor does the lack of a requirement indemnify someone from responsibility.

I work as a group partner at Y Combinator. Over the last 48 hours I've talked to numerous founders of YC companies who told me they can't make payroll to their employees next week. In many cases they had raised millions of dollars which is currently locked into their SvB accounts. Even if they get access to the insured $250k on Monday that won't last long and in many cases not even cover the payroll they are planning…

Question from a foreigner: if this bank is so important for your ecosystem, why don’t y’all interested parties chip into some fund or something and buy it out yourself?

I am also wondering this. The capital definitely exists to do it. Perhaps it is even being asked for, but out of public view.

For posterity, the chefs kiss title of this submission as of now is: “YC Is Asking for a Bailout”

It was changed to "Urgent: Sign the petition now".

Which may be the most click-baity post-edit title I've ever seen on HN.

Not a good look when there is a conflict of interest here.

Flagged!? Come on this is extremely topical, I cannot think of a more on-topic thing for HN. It brings together: - Silicon Valley - Startups - Y Combinator - Current Events Any one of those is an appropriate submission for Hacker News but altogether, it’s just … there is nothing more appropriate for HN. This belongs at the top of the front page where I encountered it.

This community is so respectful, insightful and generous that I almost forgot it had nefarious overlords over regular overlords.

Shame on you. This is a moment to remember.

Let's just bring back ol regular forums with just regular overlords (and pay them and place them on rotation).

It's well into the AM here but tomorrow I will spend a little time installing/building a little forum at this address: Oslo.eu.org

See you there, if you want.
