And before Quicksilver there was LaunchBar, which pre-dates OS X having originally shipped for NeXT. I believe I starting using LaunchBar during the OS X public Beta, and I still use it.

That's just it, being first to the market is sometimes more important than worrying about competitors. They killed it so hard with the ipod that even if the zune was a better device at the time people wanted the ipod.

The Zune came quite a while later, though (2006 vs iPod in 2001). The main competitors at the time was Creative (Nomad) and frin 2003 (IIRC) iRiver, and they typically had slow USB ports at the time and were more bulky.

I had a Creative Nomad, which I bought around the end of 2003 and I was scoffed at by Ipod owners at how big it was.

Doing a little digging, this was the model: https://www.cnet.com/reviews/creative-nomad-jukebox-zen-xtra... 4.4 x 3 x .86" bigger than the original Sony Walkman. It had much larger capacities and was outside the Apple ecosystem, which was an absolute feature at the time. Itunes was horrid.

USB Speeds weren't that big of a factor, though YMMV depending on the user. With the larger capacities of HD based players, you loaded once, which took some time, and then topped up with new additions which was not a big deal. My particular Nomad model had USB 2.0 though

Do you have a link which shows the power consumption of all the components you mentioned? I've seen this comment over and over again, everytime an increase in processor efficiency is talked about and yet those gains usually do result in a very noticiable improvement on battery life.

No, it will have a massive impact on battery life. I only meant to say, a 50% decrease in consumption by CPU doesn't translate to doubling the battery life. All those other things matter too, so maybe it translates to 20-30% more. That's still massive!

History suggests we will see obnoxious hacker news comments about how the M-series processors are some unrivaled alien technology that will be forever unbeaten when it comes to performance followed by AMD releasing a low wattage CPU with better multicore performance about 8 months later (or whenever they get fab capacity anyways).

Likewise, history will tell you we'll periodically see obnoxious hacker news comments claiming the M-series can’t possibly be better than what the x86 world has to offer. We’ve been reading for decades that ISAs don’t matter that much anymore, and yet everything that needs good battery life is ARM. Intel was the undisputed manufacturing kind for 40 years or so. Things change.

I don't know, why did x86 beat PowerPC, MIPS, SPARC, and whatever else in the desktop and server space?

Seems like node size for the price beats everything else which is what we're talking about here.

Apple's anticompetitive practices are not particularly compelling evidence of some inherent architectural superiority.

The iTunes being discussed here was not a streaming platform. It was a library management platform (2001) that also offered purchase and download of FairPlay DRM-laden music files (2003). Later it would offer DRM-free MP3 download for select music (2007) and eventually its entire catalog (2009).

Considering inflation and that you might only want two of the twelve songs on the disk, you could easily be paying $10/song (in 2023 dollars). Big chunk of change especially for a pre-teen or teenager.

Can't imagine anyone putting anything other than pirated mp3s in 95%+ of mp3 players ever produced.

Interesting article, thanks for that. One of my key takeaways is the iPod represented not one but multiple simultaneous tech revolutions. Consumer storage until then unseen, paired with material and interface design that companies hadn't considered a priority.

Yea another example is the NVIDIA Tegra. NVIDIA tried to use it to make their own portable gaming device but then Nintendo figured out how to use it to make the switch.

Not to forget the Toshiba AC100 with the original Tegra, which was one of the first usable ARM laptops (netbooks?) and helped much of Linux desktop support development for ARM in the early days.

As an embedded developer I'm always surprised that physicists and engineers spend decades pushing the limits of physics, for software devs to come along and make text editors no faster than they were on Windows 3.1

Can we stop the hyperboling? The amount of multitasking we can do on consumer computers today is nowhere close what is what possible only 10 years ago. About text editors... you can use blazing fast editors if you want like cli-base ones, notepad++ or sublimetext... If devs are not using those to code anymore there may be reasons, right?

My 2006 Vista machine, with two cores at 2.6ghz quite simply multitasked better than my current ryzen 5 3600 based machine. The one simple reason why is that all the programs I ran on that machine were native, while all the apps we run nowadays are blobs of javascript in a dumb chrome window.

Eclipse ran better on my $600 laptop in 2012 than pycharm runs on my 6 core 2019 macbook. Also, on my macbook, high cpu activity causes constant pops in my audio, which is just a thing that happens with macbooks that people just ignore apparently.
