iTunes was amazing. It’s UI was so successful it guided most of the Mac’s for next decade: Coverflow and Spotlight are direct descendants. Every major OS has Spotlight-like UI these days. You can thank iTunes for the search-as-filter paradigm. It also did everything you’d need regarding MP3s. You could rip CDs, organize and burn them, have the lyrics and album artwork show neatly while displaying a cool set of animat…

And it was originally a 3rd party product that Apple acquihired, Casady & Greene's SoundJam.

But the UI was completely rewritten. No instant search, coverflow, etc

Fun fact: Turbo Pascal was 38KB and that included the editor, compiler and debugger. It was lightning fast, compiling 10s of kSLOC in mere seconds on a 4.77MHz single-thread 8088 with 640KB of RAM. Now to build a Hello World full stack web app it can take 10+ minutes on a modern PC with 4GHz 16 core CPU and 64GB of RAM :)

depending on your network, `npx create-react-app --template typescript` might take 10-15 minutes easily.

Can we stop the hyperboling? The amount of multitasking we can do on consumer computers today is nowhere close what is what possible only 10 years ago. About text editors... you can use blazing fast editors if you want like cli-base ones, notepad++ or sublimetext... If devs are not using those to code anymore there may be reasons, right?

In many cases developer resources are more expensive than hardware or network resources and the decreased efficiency of modern software reflects that. We can all agree software is not as resource efficient as it used to be on the whole. Beyond that we’d have to discuss specific examples and benchmarks.

I'm simultaneously grateful that we value developer time and wellbeing over software performance and appalled that we too often forget the relationship between software performance and developer time and wellbeing.

\tangent The Innovator's Dilemma recounts a similar scene in 1994 - except the players don't connect. The big manufacturers couldn't find customers, and the customer couldn't find a seller. His point was about big companies being "captive" to their present customers, and to "the financial structure and organizational culture" of the value network.

But the manufacturers just thought they were ahead of the market. Given this iPod story from 2000, maybe they were.

Is there any Windows machine that's fanless and at M1 speeds?

I can set my gigabyte laptop to Quiet mode and it's as good as fanless. As to the speed, I can play Doom Eternal with it (it has a mobile 3080 card), which M1 can't.

So not fanless

I’m not sure if you’re aware of this, but alongside 3nm processes there’s a cutting edge technology called “glasses”…

Glasses help with focusing, but they don't help if your sensors (retinas) are just degrading. Putting a very fancy lens on a 0.3MP sensor doesn't give you higher resolution photos.

GP didn't mention degrading retinas, just age. I'm over 50 and need glasses but, while acknowledging that life is a one-way journey, I just don't like people talking like ageing is necessarily this slide into decrepitude after 40.

Why aren't there other companies outbidding Apple?

Because Apple has more money and higher margins than they do.

Apple is the only company to sell an insanely highly mass produced product at insanely high prices. Usually you have to pick one or the other.

So the reason is that no-one can afford to out bid them.

Why hasn't Apple just bought TSMC?

I expect it would be more likely they’d just go straight to ASML and start building their own fabs. That said, they may see enough value in their TSMC deal that it’s simply not worth what would be an eye-watering outlay for something that in the end may not really save them all that much. It’s probably not seen as a bad thing internally that other rivals aren’t able to get on 3nm either, which wouldn’t be true if App…

Intel's been going to ASML and building their own fabs for decades now. It's clearly not that easy.
