I would really like to know how long it took in wall clock time and the complete dialogue in chronological order.

It's a nice little article, but a lot of people are writing similar things, and disclosing full details would make it stand out.

This reminds me of an episode of Star Trek: TNG where Geordi is using the Enterprise’s computer to solve a problem. The computer is helpful for running simulations, answering research questions, and suggesting solutions, but Geordi does most of the reasoning work, building on information and insights the computer provides, backing up when he realises he’s on an unfruitful path, and trying different approaches until he gets the answer he needs.

I think the episode is Galaxy’s Child, but it’s been years since I watched it so my recollection might be inaccurate.

I suppose if we could combine ChatGPT, speech recognition and synthesis software, and something like Observable notebooks, we’d have a primitive version of the Enterprise computer.

Close! Booby trap is the one you’re thinking of. Galaxy’s child is where he meets the real engineer from booby trap and Geordi is sad/surprised that she’s nothing like the hologram.

thanks for the feedback! it's always a tradeoff between writing the full details (my preference too!) and keeping the article short enough so that my people with minimal patience and technical background can get through it. End to end it took maybe 2 hours to go from formulation of the problem a working solution

I watched it recently, in the first episode he creates a hologram representation of the designer and the computer fills in a pleasant personality. The real designer comes aboard a few episodes later and is very cold and hostile. She also accidentally finds the hologram of her. They end up being friends in the end.
