You are, in fact, correct. I have no idea why I converted 140 days into hours... Still, my point remains unchanged: I, at least, value reliability and uptime more than ~43 euro cents.

43 cents / day is >150 a year, that's not to be sniffed at.

Actually, at 150 / year you can rent a VPS (or two!) as well, always-on etc, which... kinda shows how skewed consumer price for electricity is.

I have a HP Microserver N40L with 4 spinning disks. Last time I measured, I'm pretty sure it was consuming around 40W.

I guess CPUs have gotten better in the last 10 years ;)

Assuming the power management for the CPU etc is working, spinning drives likely use c.7-10 watts per drive when idle but not spun down.

Probably a combination of wrong configuration of CPU scheduler and not sleeping hard drives.

Some of the hard drives do not advertise their sleep capabilities over SATA, and hdparm ignores these drives unless you force for sleep.

Intel Atom, admittedly a decade ago, was 2 - 11 watt depending on model.

I understand now that they have been rebranded as Pentiums, and the envelope is more 10-20 watts.

My desktop PCs have always been idling at more than 50W. Granted, my newest one is from 2011 or so.

I use an old Intel Macbook to selfhost this kind of services. The idle draw is around 2W and you get a free UPS if your battery is still working.

The sleep management on macOS is really well done and you don't even need a magic packet to wake the computer. You can configure `pmset` to wake on modem access (ring).
