IDNA has been a standard for 20 years. You can already do this.

However, they are IRI, not URI, and IRI support is sparse because of its dubious broader value.

Thanks! That's exactly the point of it! I'm going to be working on the CSS this weekend on stream (the images being so big for longer conversations take up too much screen real estate), but in general the idea is to have a combination of the Socratic method of dialogue based teaching combined with a few consistently written characters; not to mention it helps move out parentheticals to break up giant walls of text. I don't have any page explaining each of the characters and their tropes, but here's a small list:

Mara: the student that knows a fair bit but isn't afraid to call the teacher out on their shit, also used for most parentheticals

Cadey: the teacher that learns from student questions, also a bit of a self-insert to de-emphasize certain parentheticals

Numa: the shitposter that really does mean well, but communicates in shitposts, memes, and similar

Aoi: the idealist that has difficulty accepting the state of the world as it is

With these I create tension between the characters to help illustrate the point. Aoi was added for this article and helps to ground the satire in a sense of reality by being disgusted by this tool.

my favorite way to plumb an old / unmaintained program or workflow is to put some emoji in as an input parameter, and see where the logs start exploding

I came here to make a similar comment! A good smell test for whether a piece of software "has its act together" is to send it emoji where it expects text and observe whether it handles it gracefully or shits the bed. It's 2023 and so much bad software still assumes text = ASCII or at best assumes text = ISO-8859-1.

Note that the second link is a table of Internationalized ccTLDs and .jp is not yet on it. So you can't do it yet.

You cannot. This is an IRI, not a URI.

Browser address bars will typically convert and render URI as IRI, because they need to convey the domain name to the user (because we don't have a better way to handle reputation on the web).

Using key-based auth without encrypting the key with a password sounds like a bad idea, as then any program running on the host can trivially gain root privileges.

Any program running as your user on your personal machine can trivially gain root privileges, by dropping a program called "sudo" in your personal PATH, putting a "sudo" command in your .bashrc, man-in-the-middle a shell (how do you know that last command actually completed?), or hijacking any of the graphical programs that trivially ask you for your UNIX password to do anything (Discord/Slack/... updater, Steam, ...)

I replaced "sudo" in all my systems a long time ago with an alias to "machinectl shell .host" which is IMHO far superior to it, as it doesn't just spawn a new shell as a privileged process, but instead initializes a full user-session and then spawns a shell in this user-session. This doesn't carry the risk of tainting the new session with the context of the initiating shell (pwd, env, ...) and doesn't only feel like…

I had to:

  $sudo apt-get install -y systemd-container
to get machinectl

“Dubious broader value” is a great way to tell you’re United-Statesian without saying you’re United-Statesian.

Sudo's -i option is able to provide you with a shell in the same state that it'd be if it were a fresh login. I've burned this into my fingers a long time ago. Also, in most configurations you have to specifically whitelist environment variables for them to surivive a "sudo" call.

Is there another way of opening a root shell other than "sudo -i"? That's what I've been using for a decade. How do other people do it?

su -l root

But that only works if theres a password on root, which is generally seen as ill advised. But was how every distro did it in the olden days before there was a sudo group.
