Well, that tells me how he feels about his/The Verge's average reader, that they're too stupid to be educated about what the difference between the two is.
The author is merely defending his choice to use the more familiar term against pedants.

Most people probably don't know the difference. That doesn't make them stupid or uneducated, it just means they're probably not familiar with graphic design (why would they be?). The author is merely defending his choice to use the more familiar term against pedants.
Readers probably would appreciate getting a new piece of trivia. And those who already knew that can also have a little "I knew that!" proud moment.
