I'm becoming convinced that the "Microsoft is a good guy now" narrative was just a narrative, they still are the same company they always were.
Does anybody else have the feeling "Microsoft is back"? With GitHub and OpenAI the have put their finger on two pretty significant new projects. What new things has Google come up with over the last 5 years?
Ironic you say this given that Google is the one to invent language models to begin with and GitHub was an acquisition. I personally don’t think there have been any amazing consumer tech breakthroughs by any big tech in the last 5 years.
Specifically by Google Brain, which is really quite different from the rest of the company. It's one of the top AI research labs in the entire world.

Tablets replaced computers for the most part. They are just a good bit smaller than we expected and have the capability to do phone calls. Mobile is a much bigger market than Desktop these days.
I find tablets are good for one thing--watching movies on the go. Desktops/Laptops do a ton more than that for me. I disagree that tablets replaced computers. I've seen no evidence of that in my life. Maybe I'm an anomaly though?

Does their GitHub division make them profit overall?
Moreover I think ultimately the GitHub play was to get more devs in the azure ecosystem too by providing first class integration between dev frontend (VSC), dev backend (WSL 2, devcontainers), corporate communication and calculus (Teams and Office365), GitHub, azure.
The only thing they are really missing out still is a good chat and videocall application.
Teams has good ideas and decent integrations, but it's goodness dies once you have to interact with the core of the application: video calls are mediocre and chat is plain terrible.
I expect this deal to be a must for Microsoft. OpenAI is probably very happy to raise the stakes as much as possible. So we will see how many billions Microsoft ends up paying for this. Still, is there a world in which we look back 10 years from now and think that we were overvaluing the impact of AI? (For example, this did happen with tablets, when people thought that the iPad would replace "computers"...)
I thought they would have been bought out by Microsoft. It would be a good play to lockout others to use chatGPT and GPT3 and it would actually work well with bing to have something that Google would eventually have to copy (but it would only give them a slightly larger moat for Google to cross).
Great…now OpenAI will become Microsoft Cortana SkyNet ClosedAI. Somehow I doubt this will lead to a safe rollout of more and more advanced AI in the future.
There is no scenario in which rolling out AI will be safe. As soon as someone sees it can be done, they will do it, copy it, or acquire it. Acquisition by the unscrupulous is practically guaranteed because AI is practically guaranteed to be extremely profitable, and there are several unscrupulous entities with tens of billions of dollars. Just think about this for a moment. What are some of the most rewarding interactions you've had with people in the past year? Do you think very advanced AI (such as the next generation after ChatGPT) would have affected that?
This is pointless FUD. We may be on the verge of creating entirely new lifeforms, interactions with whom will be every bit as real as those between humans. In fact they may end up being significantly more meaningful if you can create a kind of companion AI that is the perfect friend fine tuned for each individual person.

Nah -- this sounds like Google buying YouTube or Android for billions while they were in their infancy but had proven tech. People did say at the time Google overpaid but they were some of the wisest investments Google ever made. I hope Microsoft don't buy them and OpenAI just becomes another FANG.
This is a great conversation, but I need to switch back over to my work issued machine and generate more content in Office365 to feed the models. O365, Linkedin, Xbox, Github, and other data factories have been generating a ton of data for years. Although many of us try to keep our coms private, we are forced to use their platforms at work.
