Been using Jellyfin almost since it forked from Emby. Was a bit rough early on, but works a treat for me these days - I think there's a balance point where I've adapted myself to its idiosyncrasies as much as it has improved stability and compatibility throughout version upgrades. I primarily use it via the Android TV app, and it's been a pretty smooth experience for at least the last couple of years.

I had to use my TVs internal (amazingly slow) web browser to access Jellyfin. Until a couple of months ago, when I was surprised with them announcing that they will release a Jellyfin app for LG WebOS. Works great, the only slightly annoying thing is that they don't seem to cache the posters. Every time I scroll through my library, all the posters load again. Other than that, the things which don't quite work for me:…

In the Android app, switch from one player to another, from internal to the web player in the settings. It solves the 5.1 playback issue. (Of course, it introduces others, eg. manual screen brightness but it's not as a big issue as no sound.)

I use my home server also for serious stuff in terms of data protection and archiving rules. Storing tax things, that need to be archived at least 10 years, backup of databases from my dedicated server in the internet and backup of private data, like photos and so on. For this I use an encrypted ZFS mirror running on Ubuntu. The board is a power saving ASRock J4105M with soldered low power CPU. For each HDD I use an…

How do you manage the encryption keys?

A few things that are well-covered in this thread, but my personal favorite is PicoShare. It is a nice, simple self-hosted file sharing app that fixes a lot of issues with other solutions.

Email has size limitations. Many services don't like to share .exe files. Some will apply compression (unlisted youtube videos). I like this because it's a simple app that allows you to share files with others, and give them a link to share files to you.

I always CTLR + F these threads for Jellyfin, because most people I know use Plex and don't even know Jellyfin. Are you happy with it? I've been using it for like half a year now and am pretty satisfied.

I'm a big Jellyfin user. I run it on an opensuse server that acts as my homeserver. It's just an old PC with some extra drives. I stream mostly to Roku devices and it works awesome.

I have

- A Jenkins instance, for various purposes (cf. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=25391401)

- A webservice to download music, videos and store it locally for future use.

- Another webservice to store all my photos and access them.

- A TOR hidden service to access all the above when I am overseas.

It's worth noting that they are all Raspberry Pis to which 3.5" hard drives are hooked.

Navidrome is my favorite, by far. It's like a personal Spotify. It also has built-in subsonic support. Syncthing is another I could not live without. All devices upload to my server and my server gets backed up to S3/backblaze type service. Plex for movies. But I may look at Jellyfin soon. I use Calibre-web, but it's really not my favorite. Okular is so much better. And Calibre is a chore to use and overkill for my n…

I've managed to build a huge calibre library of garbage. I've been going though and pruning... I use the desktop interface to manage the libraries, and then rsync it to my cloud host.

The whole comment section is so depressing.

Why? What do you mean?

For being "hacker" news you would expect creative or even unconventional uses of home servers.

Instead many posts are a collection of corporate buzzwords as people are bringing home their jobs, from k8s to vmware to Jenkins.

Admittedly the upvoted posts improved a lot after the first hour tho.
