The problem with this approach is that if you fail once, there goes the entire year. Try something like "not to do $x on 95% of days" or "go a full month without $x". An all-or-nothing strategy doesn't give you a mechanism to get back on the horse and improve.

i recommend exercise. I'm over 50, and often after work I'll feel totally drained. after some kind of physical activity - and food - I have energy well into the evening. 20 years ago, I didnt have to do this, but at my current age, this fixes it.
Im 34 and in the same boat. I try to hit the swimming pool 3 times a week at least, preferably during my “lunch hours” and it changes everything. Couldn’t go for the last 2 weeks and I feel like I’m 85. Not sure where it comes from.
Being able to work out over my lunch hour is easily one of the best parts of working from home for me.
I suppose it was technically possible while working in an office, but such a hassle. Always resulted in losing some workout time around the edges, too.

Yeah, and on a similar note, I'm done with thinking globally. I'm tired of wanting the world to be a better place and designing systems for the entire world. Instead, I want to focus on small scale local problems.

The small scale is pretty obvious; if it's a problem for the local community, then it's a problem to care about.
There are lots of small, local problems. The choice isn't arbitrary - it's whatever you think you are best suited to fix.

Hah! Love your nick! I haven't played games in years, but, I really enjoyed half life and the bioshock series (and portal, absolute classic). Any others to recommend in that vein?
I would like to add couple more titles to recommend: Firewatch, Fallout series and entire Metro series (2033, Last Light and Exodus). Fallout and Metro games are very similar to half life just not that hard to play.
I've really enjoyed the BioShock series and I started Metro 2033 in october. It's great.

Many don't realize how much control porn has over them until they try to quit. Quitting for 1 day, 1 week can be easy. Quitting for a year? Almost everyone who regularly watches will struggle to do so. Don't let the struggle discourage you. If you give in, try to get back up asap. Even if you don't make it 100% porn free year its not a failure. Wish you the best.
I don't understand why one would quit porn. It's great entertainment. It increases quality of life. It's an integral part of one's sex life. Why would one want to quit?

Something paradoxical about wishing to create more information and simultaneously wishing to consume less of it.
Not really. Doing so would lower the average number of readings per article. In the most extreme case, this would lead to every article being write-only and never read by anyone. Of course this is absurd because writing takes so much more effort than reading, and the vast majority of people will be consumers without writing anything (except short private chats).

If you're looking for narrative experiences, Disco Elysium is likely the best video game story ever told - bar none. Maybe not the best story (although it's really good) but the intersection of presentation and prose is exceptional. One of the few times the medium has really surpassed raw text on the storytelling metric. Some of those narrative sequences will stay with me for the rest of my life.
I second Disco Elysium. Top 10 games if not 5 I ever played. Sad thing about the studio and the creators getting pushed out of the company.
Try pentiment for a similar experience; albeit, 15th century European style.

I prefer to go all out. Allowing for leniency would be admitting defeat even before starting. I mean how difficult can it be to not view certain websites. If I fail I will implement your technique, but until then I trust myself enough to succeed.
