Get my shit in order. I feel like a lot of the systems I had in place to keep me sane and getting shit done have sort of fallen into disrepair the last couple of years. I feel tired and disorganized and spend too much time on my phone. Maybe it's a knock-on effect of the covid situation with lockdowns and isolation or I dunno. My health and fitness isn't as great as it was, I'm procrastinating too much and find mysel…

If you're interested, I'd love to chat about your systems and goals!

Whenever I'm feeling a bit directionless, small conversations with strangers start my snowball rolling :)

Improve my nutrition. I want to lose weight, but I first need to fix my relationship with food. To do this, I plan to cook food myself and reduce preprocessed food.

I eat a lot healthier when I make nutritious foods convenient.

One thing that works for me is preparing raw vegetables into "to-go" packs when I bring my groceries home.

We use glass tupperware, but plastic resealable bags work great too.

I also recommend purchasing an instant pot! You can throw frozen fish or chicken in there with some water and you have lean meat fully cooked in 5-10 minutes.

I feel, and I think it's a common thread for my generation, that we have grown weary of drinking from the information firehose. The internet has become like high fructose corn syrup for our brains. We're fat with it. So I want to consume less (low quality information) and create more. I like the idea of "note-writing as fundamental unit of knowledge work"[1] My resolution this year is to read more and to write more,…

Yeah, and on a similar note, I'm done with thinking globally. I'm tired of wanting the world to be a better place and designing systems for the entire world. Instead, I want to focus on small scale local problems.

I lower the cognitive overhead for global problems by just donating to charities that do effective work I believe in (e.g. PSI). On the local level we can at least go to town hall meetings and vote.

De-technologify. Ideally this is the year where I stop having a smartphone, very few active use-cases are left for that for me. We'll see ... Professionally, I have some plans for TVL with our Nix rewrite in terms of CI systems and interesting developer tooling. IME, making it too concrete reduces the chance of it getting done though, so I'll leave it at that :) Oh and also, get back to using Bulletjournal properly.

I'm actually mostly over the attachment at this point, it's more that I haven't found a workaround for some of the practical things:

* music (this one I'm working around now with a focused music-playing device) * navigation (this one a watch could do, but I don't have one (yet)) * ordering taxis / e-scooters / etc., - this is the sticking point, not sure what to do about it

Play more video games. I feel like this year I haven't had a chance to get lost in a great video game's narrative. Spent far too much time trying to be productive and not just taking a break to relax. Btw if anyone has any suggestions for games to play. Please share.

Don't sleep on games from FromSoftware. They make me feel the way games did over two decades ago. There's an accompanying sense of wonder and exploration, but also thrilling challenge. The narrative format is less in-your-face - there's lots of lore and optional quests/conversations with NPCs, but few cutscenes.

Professional: (1) Understand more about what roles are best for me in this world. Start-ups? Big corp? Programming? Pre-sales? Data analytics. Doing well by most objective means but have long been anxious and indecisive about what matters in my career

Personal: (1) Be a reliable communicator with my friends (2) Consume much less alcohol (3) Finally complete a side-project using either technology I've regularly used (Python, SQL) or something brand new (4) Write regularly with no excuses instead of feeling like I need to deliver the perfect newsletter post (5) Hit new PRs in my weight training regimen
