What's your blog? And how do you plan to run a calmer business?

My blog sometimes appears on this website and generates some interesting discussion. I most recently wrote about making database tables smaller, and I plan to write more posts exploring what “make it smaller” means to me. It’s usually about the size of the problem space, and the economics of expediency.

I plan to make the business calmer by further establishing a culture of conscientious writing among my colleagues. I’m a big fan of 37 Signals and I often (but not always) follow their lead in business. I have been pushing (and leading by example) for written pitches paired with fat marker sketches for proposed feature development. Previously we have plugged insufficient specification and iteration directly into high-fidelity UI design, leaving developers to infer product behaviour from graphics they see in Figma. I think this hasn’t worked.

I also plan to continue aggressively cutting features. I would rather sell half a product than a half-assed product, and I think the benefits of paring a product down to the good bits has a positive compounding effect on both the user experience, the developer experience, the sales pitch, etc.

Are you comparing porn with cigarettes for real?

Porn addiction can be much more damaging to people's lives than cigarettes.

None of the prior comments talk about addiction. Just porn consumption.

Addiction to anything is bad, simple.

I cut my podcast subscriptions down to the bone. Every night I go for a 3 mile walk and listen to a podcast. This year I want to go for walks and listen to my brain. Just the thought scares me.

Do it! This summer I started waking up daily at 6 am for an hour of uninterrupted time of thinking and prayer before my little ones wake up. It's great, I'm so happy I did it and plan on doing it forever. I find myself enjoying solitude and silence more and more. Craving it sometimes, almost. My mental health has improved a lot. It's like I never understood how much my brain needs the quiet alone time without any work planned.

I love listening to podcasts while walking, but apart from the listen to my brain thing, I also am starting to think I need to give my ears a break from my headphones…

- Read more books/long form essays. - Less Procrastination - Less reading the tutorials and start doing more "practical" stuff. i.e. write more code. - A blog post a week on my measly blog - https://blog.yelinaung.com/ - write anything that I find fun and learned! - Find a new job!

How do you plan to procrastinate less?

I've had reasonable success with applying the pomodoro method. Also try spending time at the begin or end of each day planing tasks for the coming day. I found that the main source of my procrastination comes from not having clearly defined tasks to work on.

I don't understand why one would quit porn. It's great entertainment. It increases quality of life. It's an integral part of one's sex life. Why would one want to quit?

For some people watching too much porn damages their actual sexual life. Granted in other cases might help. So it comes down to a personal choice. Some people don't want to support the darker side of the industry. They don't know/understand the implications of their watching porn has on many of the people involved. Some people may prefer to read/exercise but they keep dragging themselves into hours of porn.

There is something called “Ethical porn”. It might just be smoke and mirrors, but they promise to be ethical to people involved.

Dec 2021: I resolve to not spend christmas+new years in the office again.

Dec 2022: looks at schedual: hard fail.

At least this year the covid rules are gone. But it seems that all the same people are still working at home while all the same other people are at thier desks again over the holidays.
