Unfortunately that seems less likely given their recent turn toward Islamic fundamentalism. IMHO, anyway.

Unfortunately a lot of authoritarian/fascist regimes have done phenomenally well in the past decade - China, Russia and India is slowly following that path. As much as I hate it, and west touts democracy as a necessary catalyst for growth, the past decade as shown otherwise.

Not necessarily. I have been told that the stuff that gets play over in the US is a pretty niche category in Korea. The TV most people watch is highly commercialized.

there is an enormous amount of korean stuff to stream on US services, most of which originally aired on Korean TV and are widely regarded as the most popular korean shows of all time

They'd have to have a second, huge, secret TV industry for the stuff we have available here to not be representative.
