Why does it matter? Spotify wants the freedom to set their own margins. Compensating artists fairly starts by kicking out useless middlemen, and Apple plays that role in this instance. I'll contrast this with my TV. I want a TV that works and displays pictures & sound. Instead my TV is an Android hub with dozens of random apps installed. What it doesn't do half the time is work. Sure, I have "control" but I'd rather have "functional devices!"

I'm not sure you do have "control" if your complaint is that there are dozens of random apps installed.

If you're able to uninstall those apps then, yes, you have (some amount of) control.

Given that there is tremendous code sharing of Apple's OS+AppStore software on the laptop and phone, I have not understood how both hardware products are not subject to the same rules. Phones are basically micro-laptops and should have similar platform expectations, legally.

Apple employees have the freedom to create without coercion. You would need to lobby to change law, not preach to the choir here.

That’s what Spotify and Musk are doing; trying to manipulate public perception to influence politicians.

The problem they have is Apple is the crown jewel of US tech corps. Spotify is not and politicians are well aware Musk is a poser with money. Epic, Spotify, like Jobs once said, sell features not products.

Gabe Newell has called generative content “an extinction level event” for traditional media producers and distributors. Epic and Spotify are an AI breakthrough away from irrelevance. Why listen to them except as anything but an appeal to rapidly outdated economic traditions?

They can join the protest rotary phone makers, and horse and buggy businesses are pulling together.

You can take him completely seriously: he just wants to be able to sign up paying users on iPhone without handing 30% to Apple. I don’t think that’s particularly opaque.

Plenty of other threads about the fees but you feel the need to come comment this in a chain about Spotify neglecting to build for and support their customers. Your reply (and mine) are so incredibly unrelated to this comment thread.

Yeah, it's interesting. Who are the loudest voices here? Customers of Apple or the the companies deciding to play by Apple's rules to access Apple's customer base? It's going to be a lopsided discussion on HN because of the biases of the users here versus the average non-HN member. What does the average customer want?

Interesting way to frame it. The customer belongs to Apple. Far be it for the customer to decide what they want or like, they belong to Apple after all, and if those corporations want access to what's Apple's, they need to pay up.

You're not wrong, but imagine a world where the customer didn't actually belong to Apple and the users could decide to play Fornite or shitpost on Twitter if that was something they wanted to do. I think that's an obviously better world, even if they end up on twitter as a result.

The issue is that there's no option to use an alternative store. They're also able to extract a % from companies like Netflix just because the person happens to use an ios device. It's like if Microsoft were able to extract 30% of Netflix's subscription service because a person signed up via a Windows device, it's untenable and wrong.

Netflix hasn’t allowed in app purchases of subscriptions for years

I'm dreading the day my 4K "dumb" LCD TV dies. It's now basically impossible to replace.

You can replace it with a monitor + a pair of stereo speakers.
