Exactly this. People forget that most of hacking is social engineering.

All I can figure is these notions that it'd be fine and exactly the same come from the generation after all of us who experienced the horror of removing 20 "search bars" from every single one of our relatives' computers... and repeating every few months. And that's when they didn't manage to get outright viruses on the regular, which many of them did. They simply haven't seen how awful Internet-connected computing was for most people, at exactly the time when most people finally started to use computers at home (in the US anyway), which was right around the year 2000.

In addition, while suicide nets might sound silly, they actually do reduce the suicide rate.

I am not intimately familiar with the Apple ecosystem. This still reads like all or nothing. All as in "App Store and identified developers", or user can turn off "System Integrity Protection" completely. Turning off SIP eliminates any protection. Is that what it means to disable SIP?

If you want run an unsigned installer you just right click in Finder and select 'Open' instead of double clicking.

I'm not aware of any Mac user among my friends who isn't aware of this.

Most OSS installers but even many commerical ones aren't code signed because devs don't want to pay the Apple tax.

This is over simplifying matters. The technologies used to be optional , but in many cases is now mandatory to use an OS. Windows 11 mandates a TPM, for example - Windows 10 did not and works fine on any system without. I don’t mean to oversimplify, but you’re also conflating “PC” with “windows”. Linux and BSD are viable alternatives as well, in my opinion.

Do they lack the user land polish of windows? Sure!

But really at the end of the day you’re storing files and opening applications, and the eternal web browser. (Of which, you have 2 engine choices!)

I don't think I've ever had a non-dev ask me about "open source". Asking for free alternatives, sure, but it's very rare that I'd recommend open source alternatives for whatever normal people are doing.

So much so that I find it rather rote and boring to be honest - there's usually very little new or interesting brought up in these conversations, just the same criticism up over and over again. Thinking about the motivation of programmers. Some programmer did make the changes to limit AirDrop... Like there is a room in a meat factory where animals go in alive and come out dead. Who was that and to what extent is he responsible?
