People act based on circumstance. If there is a lot of food, people will lean towards sharing their food, and helping others - even anonymously in a truly "altruistic" sense. If everyone is starving, people will lean towards violence and stealing. Does this "expose the rotten core within us?", or is it just saying we have the capacity for both? If we were truly completely rotten we wouldn't share in either case. The…

I agree people are not rotten to the core but we keep blaming system and thus get rid of any personal accountability. Both are important. But so far it seems people have forgotten "looking at mirror". Everyone keeps blaming everyone else. So many conflicts would automatically get diffused if people looked within. Nobody wants to do that because it's hard. Blaming others and system is easy. Platforms providing healthy…

People havent forgotten anything. People are generally the same as they have always been except perhaps on average they are more educated at a global level.

It’s a hurtful topic and has complicated ramifications, but… > other whatsapp groups that I'm not in, which are filled with hateful politics. That brings the discussion from you to others users, and your goal seems to be to change how other users are affected by their time on a platform. > The radical Bolsonaro whatsapp groups are a mix of top down and grass roots content. You seem to be talking about motivated indiv…

For sure, it would be foolish to assume that the problems could be solved by changing the software, or passing a new law. Policing private groups is impossible. We're living in a new world of social media and we still need to figure out how to deal with that. I hope that in the long term there is some kind of culture shift with how people interact with the internet, because whatever we're doing today isn't working. B…

The extreme right is literally the fundamental problem. People keep saying "both sides" in this thread and honestly in most places in the world (especially US, Europe and as mentioned on this thread often, Brazil) the extreme right IS the problem. We don't need to invent scary leftist groups that threaten to overthrow the US government by storming the US capitol with nooses, we can just admit that it is the far right doing this on mass not the left and drop this stupid need to portray these global changes as a political radicalization on both sides rather than white nationalism becoming more openly violent and extreme.

Far right extremists are the problem, keep "both sides" out of this.

Hunter Biden's "laptop" is a misdirection campaign. The contents appear to be from Biden but whether or not it was actually sourced as claimed will likely never be verified (the recipient is conveniently effectively blind). But those that care about this story only seem to care about the story about the story, i.e., that there was effort to prevent propagating it. I find it fascinating that every person who is hung u…

It wasn't my intention to litigate this story here. I was simply citing it as an example of the difficulty of identifying misinformation. Also, I think a fair discussion of Twitter moderation should include a post-mortem of one of their most famous mistakes, discussing what Twitter did and what should they have done differently, and not so much the story itself. (Of course, the substance is also important, but this i…

A follow up question (as I was too concerned about defending your original complaint):

> what should they have done differently

What do you think they should have done differently?

And to follow that up, in cases of incontrovertible misinformation, how do you think that should that be handled?

Yeah, but it never had Elon Musk backing it and or was an established app the likes of Twitter is.

Zuckerberg would claim that Facebook is the defacto identity service. I see no reason why Twitter would function any better at this.

But there's no reputation system (like eBay) attached to your Facebook account.

This seems to imply that the educated man is always right and should not be questioned by others. Regardless of the education level of the questioner (or of the educated man), I can't see that being a good thing.

I didn't want to imply that. Educated people can be wrong alright. However really educated people are rarely absolute in their positions because they know that the world is not black and white and almost always the answer is "it depends" and "let's see it from the other side". However polarizing views are attracting to non educated minds because they often give their believers simplistic views, potential enemies and…

I'm afraid to say that I disagree with you wholeheartedly. I have watched, several times over the past few years, experts and non-expert well-educated people actively deride scepticism of any nature. That is, it doesn't matter what the expertise of the person or group is, what their experience is, whether their concerns have been used elsewhere by those they criticise, or whether their concerns were once seen as completely reasonable and thus natural questions to ask - they should not be asking them, hence, they are not an expert or they are stupid.

I see this from utopianists, who believe that "if only these people would get out of the way we could fix this problem and reach utopia! If they are against us they must either be evil, stupid, or both, as our position is good (quality), good (morally), and reasonable."

The next step is cancellation. I suppose we're lucky that cancellation is as far as society is willing to go at this point but we know that these things can get much worse.

As such, I must side with strong scepticism of any view regardless of expertise (i.e. argument by authority as a fallacy is the default position) and any question, by anyone, of any standing, must be taken seriously. As J. S. Mill put it:

> If all mankind minus one, were of one opinion, and only one person were of the contrary opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person, than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind.

@yishan doesn't mention the most obvious solution — let the public vote on content. Wait, Twitter and Reddit already have voting mechanisms in place? What's wrong with them? Oh, they semi-secretly sell access to their voting mechanisms and allow unscrupulous entities to manipulate vote counts to astroturf? Oh...

The real problem is the lack of transparency as platforms fight tooth and nail to retain total control over content while appearing to foster freedom of speech.

Why are they treating adults at a children's hospital? Sounds to me like an honest misunderstanding.

How is that relevant to bomb threats at a hospital?

Sorry if this wasn't clear, but that's just his perspective. Mine is that they're a bunch of clowns with little to offer anyone. Who cares what this person thinks more than you, I, or a player for the Miami Dolphins. Twitter is going to have to moderate at least exploitative and a ton of abusive content, eventually. I don't understand how this rant is helpful in the slightest. Seemed like a bunch of mumbo jumbo. You…

Who cares what this person thinks? They actually have experience tackling the problem. You or I have never been in a position of tackling the problem. Of course I am interested in the experience of someone who has seen this problem inside and out.

Yeah and he fumbled the ball. I don't believe these people have sage wisdom. He's just another schmuck.

I'm obviously referring to LibsOfTiktok, not the idiots that went there in person to do whatever they did.
