Devil's Advocate here...Let's presume you're correct. The question is: who gets to decide? Who gets to says, "Sorry, no soup or megaphone for you."
On the other hand, light sanitizes.
However, as you noted, reputation matters. And too many who should be able to outshine a jerk, don't have the juice, nor the will.
