#2Seen the same over the past few months, the only common denominator being sites that rank well on Google and are regularly targeted by negative seo campaigns.

#3I've noticed this too. The DuckDuckGo/Bing interface also has some major flaws, so more often than not I switch over to Google, particularly with complex search strings, where enabling 'verbatim' in Tools is a must. There's no verbatim option in DDG/Bing, which vastly reduces the quality of results. (If Google ever removes the verbatim option, then search will essentially be disabled for complex queries).

#4Bike Gremlin’s blog is likely hosted outside the US. Could that be a factor?

#7I suspect Microsoft isn't investing resources neither in evolving Bing nor in keeping it up to date. Probably it doesn't bring them much money and they are letting it wither and die.

#8Seen a number of similar comments recently, though none tend to mention looking at raw server log files and checking for bingbot et al actual requests to pages. Would be good to confirm the actual sighting of the bot especially due to the likes of Cloudflare operating in the middle of the request.

Through Bing Webmaster Tools, I can see pages being crawled, but not indexed. Bing has the sitemap and all the URLs. The robots.txt allows all crawlers. Even if there was an issue there, it would be on their end, and they should be the one fixing it. The result is the same: a mysterious disappearance from their SERPs. And no way or clue on how to fix it.

I wouldn't consider my website to be a well-ranked website on Google, but yet here I am with this Bing issue. I believe you're right: Bing allows spam-links to taint the reputation of a URL until they decide that the URL — the victim that has nothing to do with the spam-links — should go. Incredibly unfair and nonsensical for a search engine.
