Think of pumped storage like a battery: In areas with a lot of solar, pumped storage runs when there is a lot of daylight to store the energy for nighttime use. Pumps run when the sun is out, turbines run at night.

There is absolutely no shortage of terrain suitable for pumped hydro storage. The smaller the project is, the easier it is to find a good item for it.

Based on the number of pumped hydro vs solar projects I see approved in the US, I’d say so. We are building LOTS of solar. Not much (any?) pumped hydro. The US has plenty of land that it could use for pumped storage if it didn’t care about the environment. (See, Hetch Hetchy in CA). AIUI it’s (justified) concern about environmental impact that holds this technology back.

Nuclear fell out of fashion because people do not understand statics and were unable to address peoples concern about their safety.
Nuclear was simply too expensive for the other side to bother debating with the environmental opposition. Unless the government subsidizes it (construction costs), private companies aren’t going to go near it. Other renewables are simply so much more profitable these days.
Macroeconomics has unfortunately fallen out of fashion on todays curricula at schools/universities.

If it's below then the answer is no, so that answers my question. :) I was assuming it would be above sea level since it's inland.

Have the economics changed significantly? Was this a known-wrong assumption 15 years ago? Has the public perception changed re: the environmental costs vs benefits of this land use? Siting, operational, and land use concerns for pumped hydro are, generally, trivial. If one site is bad, another is good. There is absolutely no shortage of sites, so only the best need be even considered.
