Right—that, but stick a big e-ink display above it. USB port and bluetooth so you can use an external keyboard (though a compact attached keyboard/stand isn't a bad idea, even if it's kinda a shitty keyboard). Like this, but instead of printing your finished line to paper it "prints" to e-ink: https://i.ebayimg.com/00/s/NzY1WDEwMjQ=/z/IA8AAOSwQ59ZZBmO/$... But, you know, not huge.
So… an eInk laptop?

Sony Digital Paper was such a product but very few outside of Academia and some Japanese business customers bought it.
I’ve had one for many years and found it to be the perfect device to read and take notes on PDFs: 13” screen, super lightweight, easy to send PDFs to it and from it through the app and writing on it feels similar to writing on paper. Unfortunately the pen’s tip broke off and there doesn’t seem to be any way to fix it or buy new ones. It is mostly useless without it.

I tried to look it up - https://www.amazon.co.jp/s?k=fujitsu+quaderno+a4 - and only the smaller A5 seems to be available
The A4 goes in and out of stock. It’s a popular product in Japan and it seems like demand is higher than supply.

#155Boox e-ink tabs do the same thing, but they're Android underneath so it's not locked down to Amazon and dependent on partnerships with Microsoft to add an export button.
I also own a boox - a four year old device. Supports epub, pdf etc. out of the box. The Kindle app works flawlessly. The O’Reilly learning app works great, too. Drawing functionality is as good as the current state of eink screens. Pretty sure I wouldn’t want to lock myself into the Amazon content ecosystem ever again.

#157I was really hoping for a Kindle with USB-C and page turning buttons; inexplicably this still does not exist.
The Oasis, with page-turn buttons, hasn't been refreshed since mid-2019; the latest Paperwhite, with USB-C port, was released two years later. I expect the next Oasis will have USB-C.

The current (gen 2) Quaderno A4 is really excellent and pretty inexpensive ordered from Amazon JP given current exchange rates.

It really isn't convenient to be locked into an ecosystem. You should test your backup. And the best way to test a de-drmed book is by reading it.
Amazon and Apple and all their users that like being in that ecosystem would disagree with you. I was never inconvenienced by being on the Kindle ecosystem, since anything I would like is there, and possibly for a lower price than the rest. Plus, the reader syncs to the cloud, and if I'm stuck waiting somewhere for an appointment, I can just continue reading on my phone. Using Calibre and de-drm-ing books is way more…
For non-DRM books, I upload it to Google Play Books so I can read it via cloud and sync like Kindle.

#160I was just looking at the eink device market a few days ago. I have a dream e-ink product in mind. It's really just an iPad with a color e ink screen. Boox seems to be the leader with tons of different products (looked at remarkable, supernote, kobo, Boox). I wish apple would make an e ink tablet - I would buy that in an instant. I want to be able to mark up anything and share it - epub, pdf, mobi, etc. I'd also love…
How long do you think is it until high refresh rate, color e-ink displays become a thing? What is a "high" refresh rate when it comes to e-ink? I'm very curious about this technology, but haven't looked into it much.
I meant high refresh rate in context of eink screens today. I want a refresh rate nearly as good as a normal monitor (~120) but I'd be happy ~100 too. EInk seems to be anywhere from 15-70 (hard to pin this down) so still some work is needed.
