If Software Freedom Conservancy win their lawsuit against Vizio for GPL violations in their TVs, you will probably be able to install open source Linux distros with KDE Plasma Bigscreen or Kodi on any Vizio TV and soon afterwards lots of other smart TV vendors including Samsung will likely be similar. Allowing the vendor operating system to remain on the device after you purchase it basically means ads/spyware these days.

If optical works reliably, you could possibly leave both HDMI and optical plugged in to the sound bar. CEC volume control and power seems to still work with my sound bar when set to the optical input.
My setup currently has an audio drop out every few minutes. It seems to happen over both ARC and optical, though, so it's presumably just the Nvidia Shield being buggy. The UI bugs out too lately. I've had various forms of audio drop outs on that TV since at least 2020. It could be the TV corrupting the passthrough I guess. I'm not going to buy a whole new TV just to test that hypothesis.

I've never seen a great projector that doesn't make a ton of white noise form the fan. Do "silent" projectors exist?
Not 100% silent, but lots of new projectors are based on LED/laser lamps, which produce a lot less waste heat.
Plus there's now ultra-short-throw projectors that sit in the front of the room, rather than above / behind you.
Ultra-short-throw also has the advantage that you can use from-below lenticular screens. This means that ambient room light affects them a lot less, since they refelect light mostly coming from only where the projector is.
Sadly, "smart TV" has infected projectors as well. But maybe not as bad as normal TVs. Most projectors still have dumb inputs that work fine.

Likewise. I used to mostly buy Samsung. My latest TV was an LG OLED. Not only I find webOS infinitely more usable than anything I've seen on Samsung TVs, but the image quality is excellent and even the built-in speakers are acceptable after I disabled the crappy AI-assisted stuff that makes it all sound like it's reverberating in a dumpster.
I'm honestly a bit surprised whenever I hear someone talk about the speakers on a TV. Surely most people (especially for anyone who is dropping decent money on an OLED) are running external speakers?
Well, my TV is older, but I don’t use an external speaker.
But because of laziness I suppose, but also because I don’t want a sub-woofer type sound. Also don’t want a second remote.
I am sure those things can avoided, so I am open to advice on what to get.

You could pick up a soundbar that works with hdmi arc. No sub, works with tv volume, and better sound than tv speakers.

I was so happy with this until I updated my firmware because I had a weird issue with Dolby Vision content. Unfortunately this doesn't work with the latest firmware.
