Most technologies with a huge installed base are obsolete compared to the state of the art. The larger the installed base, the higher the likelihood it is lagging behind the current patch revision. Magstripes and internal combustion engine ground vehicles are probably the two biggest examples outside of sociology/government.

What's the state of art for sociology/government?

Something other than the church or representative government for sale to the highest bidder.

Well a restaurant bill is in some sense a debt for the food that was already provided.

There are restaurants where you do not receive the food until after you pay.

If you go anywhere where they hold a tab open, such as a bar, you can't do that with tap/chip. Not that that's a blocker, since worst case you do a bunch of single transactions, but it's an annoyance.

Originally I was thinking they could handle an open tab like a gas station — place a hold on the card for $X for an open tab. But then, the more I thought about it, I’m not sure I want to be the bartender that has to explain why there was a hold of $100 on a college kid’s debit card.

Sorry you can’t buy lunch, but the hold will get released in a few days, so it’s ok!

There’s got to be a better way…

And with those restaurants you don’t have a “debt”, so they don’t have to accept cash (unless your state has a law about it).

I only get cash out for buying drugs. That's my use case.

Drugs, marketplace/Craigslist stuff, farmers markets and food stalls, all tips unless it’s a restaurant, a lot of my landscapers/contractors etc.

Why is that? Due to older machines used or something else?
