It's too bad they won't just open source it...

XMMS is the closest we had, I don't think it's kept up anymore.

I'd say it has effectively been succeeded by Audacious:

There's another open-source media player that will let you load up WinAmp skins. But heck if I can remember what it was, or find it. It looks nothing like WinAmp without the skins though... confirmed. plays as soon as you launch winamp for the first time.

runs well in wine too. I'd say it's like 1998 here, listening to the new pornographers on winamp if not for the flac and wine and linux

That is a monster migration. I wonder how big the migration compatibility list was. I haven't used VS since about 2017, but in some ways I miss it. It's big and unwieldy, but very powerful and helpful and was a staple of my 20s as a software dev.
