So I was wondering, does this mean Meta will have to hire people who are 10x more productive and Get Things Done at a faster, more reliable pace? If there are people like that who yield better results consistently, how do they manage burnout? Are they treated as the mythical 'rock-star engineer' who other companies like to poach and clamor for? 10x output is so rare in this industry, and having 10 employees that matc…

They are probably already trying to get two 10xers to breed a 100x.

Apparently a few of you have never met consultants...

I mean, isn’t that always the case though? That lots of people don’t belong there? It’s just the law of large numbers + the ever shifting lives of people.

Don't see why this should always be the case. Also I don't recognize your use of addition and the sense in which you invoke the law of large numbers.

There is no hiring process that is perfect. Plus, people burn out, organizations shift focus, etc. People who shouldn’t have been hired in the first place make it in, and people whose skills no longer match the job hang on.

> It's absolute insanity that they don't see that the best talent can and will walk out the door if this happens Or maybe the best talent is sick of these overpaid rest-and-vest lackeys and more than happy to see them get the axe.

Why would you think that the people who managed to navigate office politics enough to avoid being fired so far are the ones who will get fired now?

For sure they may not, but this announcement implies they're aggressively looking for people to terminate

Do any companies in the medtech space pay as well as the other options?

In my experience, yes. I get paid a bit better than I would expect at Microsoft and a bit worse than if I went to Apple.

Is this in Silicon Valley? In my area (a southeast tech hub) I’ve seen these type of companies offering jobs in the $100k-$120k range, which is far below Microsoft or any FAANG.

That may be for more cold blooded companies but most PIPs I've witnessed have gotten severance and actually good packages to boot.

Same here. Severance is very cheap in the grand scheme of things. If someone is a poor performer, they're essentially a negative value add. Your default is continuing to pay them a salary, so you may as well agree to continue to do that for a number of weeks and just have them not work. I've seen 2 weeks for every year at the firm as standard

It's not necessarily about severance; could be keeping unemployment insurance premiums low, too.

Now we are entering what I like to call the "pauper CEO" phase of the economic cycle. When leadership turns out their pockets and "socializes the losses" as it were. Generally even if you work for a company that is unaffected by the current economic climate, it will be used as a justification for low raises and higher expectations at work. With high inflation happening at the same time, we are entering a bad time to…

Yeah, we finally entered a phase where employees had some leverage and it quickly turned into an economic liability (high inflation). I'm more convinced that organized labor is the only answer as the years go by.

> I wish large companies would collectively do more to go after leakers in court to stop this trend. "Don't talk or we'll ruin your life financially." Whistleblowers have a hard enough time in this day and age. I hope more do this - corporations dominate enough of our lives.

There is a very specific meaning of whistleblowing and giving every leaker that title does a disservice to those that are actual whistleblowers.

I don't see how this doesn't fit the meaning - providing info of something that can severely damage many people's livelihoods.

Really high performance MANAGERS understand you can't succeed at scale without indicators. You seem to come from the naive viewpoint that solo devs rule the world and run open-loop like some imaginary hotshot. That couldn't be more wrong.

Anyone who isn't directly contributing to a product can't be high performing. Maybe they can be supportive of high performing individuals, but usually that just entails keeping upper management out of the way. As a field we have yet to find good metrics for coding performance, anyone who tells you otherwise just wants to have an excuse to fire you when they suddenly decide that you no longer serve their purposes, eve…

> Anyone who isn't directly contributing to a product can't be high performing.

Are you implying managers don't directly contribute to a product? Because wow, you're really either horribly naive or wildly narcissistic. As a someone who managed programmers for almost 20 years, only a fraction were hands-off. Why do you think all the 10x engineers become managers? A high performing manager hits targets, ships products, and makes customers happy. If you think a hot shot programmer on a team can do this all by themselves, I don't know what to tell you. You'll have to learn the hard way.

Imagine how bleak it must be to be an average SWE at facebook. Sure, you get paid a ton of money, but now they are going to "turn up the heat" on you to pump glorified CRUD message board features faster. (yes, I know there are probably lots of intellectually interesting jobs at Meta, but the overall purpose and mission just isn't exactly inspiring)

Add to this the devastating effects that they had on human minds, in particular on teenagers. When money is good, most people turn a blind eye. Stop the music and people will think twice.

Let's also not forget that Facebook knowingly facilitated a genocide of the Rohingya people of Myanmar.

Yes, most people dont realize companies can be financially impacted through the unemployment system when they lay someone off even if there are no direct severance payments.

An employee who quits isnt eligible for unemployment.

(these rules obviously vary by country/state/etc)
