Would it not overheat after some time?

Some models definitely overheat. Some models also don’t have clean HDMI output. Basically, you can’t just buy a random mirrorless or SLR camera and hope it works. You have to pick from a smaller list of known-good setups.

Any recommendations for the cheapest second hand SLR one can buy to have streamer quality webcam feeds?

I'm the cofounder at Lumina - we're building a modern webcam designed to solve some of these problems. There's really been a lack of innovation in the entire home office space, with the webcam being particularly bad. It sucks that a decade-old product (Logitech C920) is still the bestselling product today -- that would be like if Apple stopped releasing new phones after the iPhone 4S (launched 2012), and it remained…

I just checked out lumina and comparisons, it looks average tbh.

I expect mobile phone cameras to kill webcams. All the innovation happens there and when people already have something getting closer to dSLR quality each year, why invest in a specialised webcam? Apple just needs to bake webcam sharing/remote camera control into iOS and come up with a nice attachment for the phone that works with MacBooks and displays so you don’t have to look at the camera at a weird angle. Maybe s…

Something has changed in Monterey so it is possible to use virtual webcams even with Apple apps (Facetime, Safari, etc). See https://daringfireball.net/linked/2022/05/06/camo-1-6

So it should work not just for iPhones.

> Size isn't everything. As the iPhone shows, you can get very good image quality from a tiny sensor and lens if you have the right tech supporting it. (At Lumina, most of our eng effort is on the software layer) This is my problem with all the webcam startups. So what if you can mask some of the problems of small sensors and lenses using machine learning that adds a whole new set of problems? You could have done tha…

Apple already did this as discussed, but I’m going to make a different point:

This whole idea is against what Apple wants to be and so I think they will kill it (“evolve past it”) as soon as they can. Using an iPhone as a webcam is below Apple’s threshold of sleekness.

Apple would be the kind of person who doesn’t have anything in their pockets because that would “ruin the lines”, and when they need to buy something at a store instead of carrying a credit card they just call their lawyers and tell them to buy the whole thing so they are free to take whatever they want and write it off inventory.

When they interact with someone who is not as sleek, they look down and imply they are poor. “Why would you carry around that big thing (card) when you could simply buy the store? I don’t know if we should associate with each other...”

This is the answer. Camera and processor from a several-year-old smart phone, which is now quite cheap. Sell it for $500. So far no one has, there must be a reason no one can.

At that price point you're competing with a GoPro, which is likely as good or better at a lower price. All (or most?) current GoPros can be used as a webcam.

GoPro is too clunky to carry around for use with a laptop.

Meanwhile, sensor and lens from a smartphone camera can fit in a small enough form factor that it makes sense to carry it around alongside your laptop.

Unrelated, you (the article's author) have a seriously gorgeous mane of hair.

What supplements help for this?

I've read Vitamin D can help thicken existing hair. It supposedly is good in stimulating new and old hair follicles. When there isn't enough vitamin D in your system, new hair growth can be stunted. (Or so I've read.)

I'd love to hear a sample of a British accent where everything sounds like Samoa or similar! :D

I guess it is meant to be 'somewhere'.

There honestly didn't seem to be any such rhyme or reason to it - it was way too frequent. Often replacing a whole sentence. (Not that those either side would be recognisable enough to see that it was a sentence between them being replaced.)

The first time we saw it there was a good lot of 'what the hell is this' before we even realised it was supposed to be a transcript, it was that bad. I'm not talking about just the odd bits replaced with weird words/phrases - the whole thing would be utter nonsense.

(And this was in Cambridge, not to say everybody was local (I'm not), but still, predominantly 'standard' not-straying-too-far-from-RP accents, it's not like it was some difficult niche regional accent & dialect that it couldn't understand.)

I use Camo (lifetime $79 license) and an iPhone SE I picked up on eBay for $200. I've had dozens of people comment how clear my camera is. Many now purchased a similar setup. I used OBS for a long time since it was free, but the quality wasn't close. If you're in a line of work that requires you to stream it's a worthwhile investment by a great company that just keeps getting better.

I used to use this setup but got tired of turning on the phone for meetings and doing that while it's in its stand or messing up the camera angle a bit. Camo also sometimes wouldn't connect right away which is especially annoying when I'm already running late. Did you find a way to mitigate those issues?

I used this for the camera angle. Works really well.

On timing – I just had to start planning a bit better. In worst case I'd start the meeting without video and turn on a minute or two in. Well worth it for me.

Why can't apple put the iphone rear camera in the MacBook?

Because it's too thick. Think about why iPhone should have that ugly camera bump. MacBook's display is too thin to have that.

Make the display thicker then, like the plastic shell ones of the past.
