JetBrains products have a perpetual fallback license so you absolutely can pay up front and then never pay again if you are ok being on an older version of the software. It's about having the option. It shouldn't be the case that you have to modify your editor's source code, but if it's open source, at least you can do that. With a proprietary editor, you're screwed.
