From where I'm from (Southeast Asia), Facebook is very essential too. From catching up with family, friends and most of the businesses here prefers transacting on Messenger. We don't really care about Metaverse or anything of the same nature. I think that is just an American thing.
While that the line I normally use, I will give them some benefits of doubt, it is the Silicon Valley / US Tech / US Mainstream media thing.
