Yup. This is exactly what we do at work. At least the past few years, most people couldn't tell the difference. We pump them out. It's 80% as good as something way harder to make. But by now people have seen so many, maybe they're starting to tire of it.

I feel like Netflix always kind of had an issue with poor taste. They have crappy reality shows and pseudo-documentaries about how the aliens build pyramids. I suspect the data teams have a lot of sway at netflix right at the top exec levels. I know this anecdotally since I am close to someone who has approached Netflix and was told it wont work for them.

Their reasoning was as simple as it can get. Their data showed what shows people liked in terms of genres and runtimes.

That might seem reasonable for short term gains until you realise how silly it is for longevity.

The MCU by itself has made over $25 billion world wide and that’s not counting the Fox/Marvel series that Disney now owns. They must be doing something right. And that’s just in theaters. That’s not counting money made via syndication, licensing, home video, etc

Sure, but they have tapped into a pre-existing fan base and many decades of storylines, themes, and characters. Disney has also done this successfully with the Star Wars franchise, and the Mouse House will likely continue to make most of its profits in the future from long standing cultural properties.

One of my Netflix bad habits is fast forwarding through predictable scenes. A lot of their series appear to be padded out to make up a series instead of a long feature film, and as a result I find myself fast forwarding through at least 50% of a series. Time wise I am watching it all, however, engagement is self evidently lowrr

I agree. Though slightly off topic, Forensic Files was pretty biased. The educational aspect mostly makes up for it, but they make forensic science appear way more rock solid than it was back at the time. Many of the crimes featured were solved because the perpetrator was so incompetent. But every episode had to end with something along the lines of "this would have been the perfect crime if not for the science!"

Would be nice to have a show like that again with a similar format but eased back on the law enforcement propaganda.

If anything this validates those complaints. They are course correcting. Wouldn’t need a memo like that if their content wasn’t leaning to one side. The only reason Chapelle is on Netflix is because one of the CEOs is a huge fan. There was a lot of internal pushback.

In other words, CEO endorses and demands a "comedian" who punches down on __other minorities__, and somehow Netflix is "woke".
