Depends on whether you interpret something being on the news as a measure of how common it is. This is often demonstrated with the two hypothetical headlines "Dog bites Man" vs "Man bites Dog". One is expected based on its ubiquity, and so a poor headline, where you want some emotional reaction to hook readers.

True - and a good point - but also a troubling one as the clear implication is that male suffering is really not considered a concern - at least to the news platforms.

Or maybe we don't care much about what happens in our jails. As if being raped in jail was part of the sentence. Note that rape is only the extreme form of the violence that inmates, mostly males, endure.

I can't see where the suffering of men would be silenced because of their gender.

On the contrary, at last, more and more often men express their suffering, which is great because the "silent strong" man used to be the reference. Men as warriors don't ever complain etc.

There are more and more often in the news men stating their feelings: veterans with PTSD, Johnny Depp courageously telling how he has been abused by his partner, men denouncing being on verge of burning-out at work etc.

As a man, I consider that yes, there is still plenty of men suffering in silence. And that needs to come out. The more men are able to get over the silent strong man figure - John Wayne! - inherited from the past, the more the media will talk about it.

Nobody is silencing the suffering of men ; the men need to reconnect with their feelings and learn to express them. Most women are more able to express their feelings and they are indeed "silenced" - even if less and less so.

An example? The "mental load". In many modern heterosexual couples, the woman is still in charge of the general on-going of the home, and the man goes to work without that load. When he comes home, he waits to be asked or just does the minimum.

If you have ever been in charge of a project at work and your colleagues are only participants, you know very well the difference. Being in charge of the general coordination, ensure that everything is done when required, is quite a load.

Things are improving. Slowly.

I know what you mean, but I don't know how the heck you could arrange for just the right combination of large doses of modafinil and profound exhaustion at just the right times. To give you some idea of how profound my fatigue was, let's start with the fact that I've been extremely sensitive to stimulants of any kind since I can remember. A can of coke past 8PM would keep me awake half the night. It's a trait that I…

Is it the caffeine or the sugar when you drink the can of coke or both? I've found sugar to be way worse for my insomnia than anything else. Caffeine does play a role but excess sugar really revs me up ironically.

It was definitely the caffeine. For example, a can of Diet Coke was just as bad. I also know from experience with other stimulants that I was just extremely sensitive to stimulants in general (and so is my mother, and so is my daughter).

Not anymore, though; not since I developed CFS.

Some French speaking countries use a more logic term for higher numbers. In Belgium and Switzerland 99 would be nonante-neuf which is ninety-nine. My uneducated guess is that at the time, it was easier to keep the base 20 to visualize a higher number. Just like we say "a few dozen eggs" to get an overall sense of the volume, it made more sense to keep it that way instead of a more arithmetic approach. Not sure why it…

> a more logic term Logical according to whom? Why is base 10 more logical than any of the other bases? I'd argue it's not , it's simply that it's what we're used to so we think it's more logical.

The logical term is one that conceives the best amount of information with the least amount of phonemes. 4 20 10 9 isn’t it.

Ordering a typical printed circuit board with components placed on it is so cheap nowadays that this is a viable option for electeonic hobbyists nowadays (e.g. just ordered 50 pieces of audio output amplifiers at 3,49 € per piece (customs and shipping included), where 1.60 € would be the parts cost of the two chips on it. Only thing you need for this is: 1. An idea and some knowledge about electronics 2. An EDA softw…

I find this to be amazing. I last designed a single layer PCB for an industrial control application, in the 1990s, using OrCad for the schematic, and a paint program to lay out the PCB.... needless to say, I look forward to KiCad and just having something show up at my door.

Now all I need is an idea worth spending the money on. 8 )

The saying "blood is thicker than water" is from the Bible. The full quote is "the blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb," which means the opposite of how "blood is thicker than water" is used.

Any idea where in the Bible it says that? I spent a couple minutes searching and found many sites saying the same thing you did, but nobody cited which verse. I searched a dozen or so translations of the bible and did not find it, either. Which makes me wonder even more, as there were just as many sites saying it originated in 12th century writings.

This is if you have emacs-based keybindings (which is the default). M-f/M-b (Meta, often the alt key or option key) will move forward/backward a full word. C-f/C-b moves forward/backward a character. C-w kills the previous word (if you're in the middle of a word it leaves everything from the cursor to the end intact). C-r will search backward in your history allowing you to type partial matches (like, "I know I compi…

Aren't all terminal bindings emacs-based, since they inherit from libreadline?

By default, yes. (Well, its not the terminal but the shell that takes input) but readline has support for vi bindings configuration

Most rape victims in the United States are men: https://www.hrw.org/reports/2001/prison/report.html Caution: that’s hard, explicit, distressing reading.

This reflects the abnormally high proportion of people jailed in the USA: - 80K inmates for 68.5M inhabitants in the UK => 0.12% - 1,215K inmates for 331M inhabitants in the US => 0,37% There are therefore around 3 times more people incarcerated in the US than in UK, proportionally. As rapes are very frequent in the US jails (as this terrible report points out) and most of the jail population are men, then indeed, wh…

I find your analysis abhorrent. It’s like you begrudgingly acknowledge the humanity of men prisoners.

> The US exception is not related to a gender equality but to the abnormal rate of incarceration.

It’s related to a gender inequality. The US incarceration system has gender inequality built into it, so more incarceration means more inequality.

You could say indigenous people didn’t really have a childhood sexual abuse problem, but an abnormal rate of state-mandated religious schools. Sounds pretty gross, right?

In some editors (SQL server management studio, visual studio code, but badly), ctrl-shift-arrow keys lets you edit many rows of text simultaneously. Simplest example is multi-row comment, but if you align your code well, some repetitive tasks become surprisingly efficient.
