Ask HN: What are your favorite podcasts or other audio-based content?

I’m looking for stuff that I can listen to while running or working out. I have never been into audiobooks or podcasts, so figured I’d ask this community for help getting started.

I am open to most topics like technology, current affairs, business, entrepreneurship, pop culture, food. Not interested in the true crime genre. I just want content that is interesting and engaging (so really an audio version of HN).

Obviously one of the most popular in that genre, The Joe Rogan Experience, which everyone has most likely heard of but probably not listened to. He has a wide variety of guests, some more interesting than others.

Here are some of my favourites:

- #1572 - Moxie Marlinspike (one of the founders of Signal)

- #1368 and #1536 - Edward Snowden (NSA Whistleblower)

- #1169, #1470, #1609 - Elon Musk (of Tesla, SpaceX fame)

- #1035, #1385 - Paul Stamets (The Mushroom Man, TED talk: https://youtu.be/XI5frPV58tY)

- #1800 - Gavin de Becker (Leading expert on protection of public figures)

He's had Jack Dorsey, Bernie Sanders, The Undertaker, Mike Tyson, Miley Cyrus, Kanye West... and many more, most of them very entertaining and insightful.

Anything by Rooster Teeth is worth a try for comedy; not to everyone's taste, but if you like the main RT podcast there is a long backlog worth listening to. Skipping back 200 episodes got me through my PhD write-up.

Any shows hosted by Joe Ressington are good for Linux news if you want down-to-earth, honest conversation. Jupiter broadcast shows may also be worth a look, but personally I find most of the hosts quite annoying and their discussions superficial.

The Economist has a good spread, I mostly stick with Babbage and "Checks and Balance".

For hipsters talking about "productivity" (ie podcaster autofellatio) using Macs and other expensive tools, check the relay.fm offerings.

I like Making Sense with Sam Harris. He’s not afraid to challenge guests, or take controversial stands on topics (eg. We don’t have free will) and overall a breath of fresh air in a chaotic world.

I think the more fundamental reason I enjoy listening to him is his search for truth and his upstanding ethics. He genuinely wants a world where there is less suffering, and I’m glad he’s taking others along for the ride.
