It's funny that learning to live life on my own terms has had the opposite effect on me. I pursue leisure and hobbies instead of building solutions or innovating.

Well, actually people will be happy to exploit you into doing things the help THEIR purpose but you aren't be true to yourself if you let that happen.
Is this really what I love? Is my solution actually helping anyone? Will I have to make compromises to better monetize my solution? I've been working on this project for a year and don't feel like I've made a meaningful innovation.
Some people go down this path and everything works out well but not everyone.

The main thing I take issue with in your comment is the criticism of "Making the world a better place". What exactly is wrong with that? Nothing, I say. Maybe you're thinking of those who have co-opted that phrase to do bad, selfish things. There's nothing wrong with making your surroundings, your community, and beyond, a better place.

"Living life on your terms" isn't binary. It's fine to try to live life more on your terms. There are limits to how much you can do so, though. "Doing what you love" may not pay the bills. You can find something that pays the bills that you love more than what you're doing now. For example, if your thing is ballet, you may not be able to make a living at it.
