If users were willing to put up with all the dark patterns, ads and tracking in Windows 10, they'll suffer through this too and the next iteration. People using computers as appliances won't care, and the rest technical enough to be annoyed are boiling frogs.

Yeah, this. Macos is my daily driver and it does a good job of staying out of my way. I recently got a windows pc just for gaming, and god DAMN it's annoying. Even worse than Vista. Nothing is consistent anymore and everything is always trying to grab my attention for irrelevant shit. What the hell happened :/
Macos is my daily driver and it does a good job of staying out of my way. As a long time Windows and Linux user who recently got a MacBook Pro, I find the UI incredibly weird and confusing compared to what I'm used to. The hardware is however more than good enough that I'm willing to put up with MacOS until I get used to it.
Yeah, it does take some getting used to. It's nice having a real shell though, and not have to worry about Windows Subsystem for Linux to get work done.
As someone who grew up with MS-DOS, Windows used to be really good until Microsoft started getting desperate and started shoving crapware down your throat... ads for Office, preinstalled Teams that starts up by itself, Skype, stupid Defender scans, nonstop UAC warnings, won't let you use a password instead of a PIN... all these dumb, user-hostile decisions. Zero respect for their users.
Apple has a bit of that now (iCloud logins, OS level notifications, bundled apps) but not quite as bad.
If Linux had Adobe Suite and MS Office I'd probably switch in a heartbeat. Need those to collaborate with other non-devs in the office.

Out of curiosity, what games do you play? Would wine and/or a virtual machine suffice?
I actually play a lot of old school games so 1) Dosbox solves a lot of them and 2) Never tried that but maybe Wine solves the rest.
A list of freq games:
1) Baldur's Gate EE Trilogy (And their EE cousins)
2) Quake I (this I'm sure can be played in Linux directly)
3) Diablo 2 (Also think there is a Linux version, they even have a MacOS one)
That's pretty much it, and TBH I don't really play them frequently, maybe a few times a week? So yeah I can probably move into Linux right now, and the only "obstacle" is that I removed most bullshits from Windows 10 Pro and it is now usable, so I'm kinda lazy to change. On the other side, since I want to learn sys programming, that's some incentive to move to Linux...

Windows with i5 or less plus HDD with about a year of use (which leads to bloat) is painfully slow.
Yup, I got a relatively new AIO from work for free, set it up as an all purpose media machine in the kitchen, but no one ever used it bec it was so slow, after about a yr of aggravation I decided to check the specs, had an HDD, I replaced it with a cheap sata SSD, now it purrs.

I don't use telemetry in the hopes that they'll see that only X% of users use telemetry and that they thus remove telemetry as a feature. Not working well so far.
To be fair, it's hard to see how many users are not using telemetry when they're not using telemetry.

#678Of course I agree with these confounding decisions, and I've written about it before. I must, however, point out that yes, you do in fact need an Apple account to log into your Mac device on recent versions of macOS. Not only that, but you won't be able to download any apps (free or not) without adding a credit card to your account.
I found the mac setup experience to be even worse than Windows 10 (both of these done in the last 6 months). I haven't even tried Windows 11 and have no intention of doing so. In both cases I made choices during the setup process that were not the default, and I believe that it broke some things, at least in the case of Mac, where most of the users do have another Apple device to use for 2FA, or do want to use iCloud for backups (or OneDrive - I'm sure some people use these services but I have absolutely no desire!)
Anyway, it's very frustrating to watch the user experience getting worse and worse from organizations that have an amount of resources to work with that we can't even fathom.
Edit: to say I'm not hugely invested in either Windows or Mac's longterm success. There are no personal or professional computing needs that I have (or predict) that can't be satisfied in Linux, and my usage patterns reflect that.

#679Kinda at a loss for OS/DE at the moment. Lived on Windows for over 2 decades (completed work via a Linux VM). Windows 8 was horrid and Windows 10/11 is hostile towards user experience (etc, etc privacy, but mostly user experience). Used MacOS for half a decade after that and loved the Unix terminal and tight desktop experience but underpowered and overpriced hardware had me running a hackintosh for over half of that…

Tell me you're not a gamer without telling me you're not a gamer.
The desire to play with mouse + keyboard is reason enough to stick with a PC. Wanting to play in 1440p @ 144 fps is another. First-class support for Discord. Steam sales. I could go on and on about reasons to play on PC.
Steam on Linux is getting better, and the success of the Steam Deck might convince developers to offer greater Linux support, but it's still not at the level it needs to be. Not to mention this argument completely ignores non-Steam games like League of Legends. It kind of works on Linux...sometimes...and with a lot of configuration and work.
Also, the suggestion to just get a VR headset is absurd.
