This website is REALLY good at making everyone outside of San Francisco/NY really underpaid.

From what I've read, New York has really good public transportation, so one could live in any of those areas and work in another of them reasonably. How does that affect what companies actually pay there? Are salaries in Manhattan actually higher in accordance with the Manhattan cost of living, or does the presence of nearby, cheaper, areas bring the pay down?
The "search as you type" feature is frustrating and, frankly, rubbish.
