Miners aren't happy Nvidia doesn't want to be part of their game and demand this mining ban is lifted.
I really hope Nvidia doesn't even consider complying. Screw these people's game and their extortion.

Woah there. I don’t like the crypto culture and mindset as the next guy, but there are plenty of other options to preventing use case you presented. If systems aren’t closed enough already… And as far as the gaming goes, I cannot see how playing games is more noble usage of gpu than crypto mining.
"I'm just gonna artificially raise price of this limited resource even though there already exists hardware specifically made for me, but after the next generation comes out I can re-sell this one to some sucker" If you don't see anything wrong with that then that's about it. I really hope US or China or someone is going to regulate cryptocurrencies to shit so cryto-bros can stop destroying the planet and normal peop…
Also, for "normal people" there are plenty of 1 and 2Gb videocards at reasonable prices, unusable for mining.

The binary driver made me a big NVidia fan FWIW. It works, consistently and easily, on both Linux and FreeBSD. The unified release makes both of those feel like a first-class citizen alongside Windows. It's always been more reliable than the ATI/AMD drivers, even when the latter are notionally open-source. (I will say that Intel video drivers have also always been good). Sure, it'd be nice for it to be open-source to…
Which card do you use?
A bit off-topic, but the fact that criminals asked for help mining, instead of money or crypto-money, just gave me an epiphany: The whole internet is showing the first signs of a digital Resource Curse [1] brought by crypto mining. Crypto mining changed the economics of the digital world in such a drastic way that it is poisoning all kinds of internet interactions. It is not just about disrupting how money used to wo…

Developers of the open source nouveau driver for nvidia GPUs certainly won't: https://nitter.eu/_Lyude/status/1498811646697000961
I honestly don’t care about nouveau. It’s a fine project, but as a user I know it as the preinstalled software that cripples my servers until I install the proprietary drivers. If nvidia releases the drivers as source-available rather than open source that would still be incredibly useful since you can distribute patches. Their drivers are still missing basic features like fan speed control on headless machines.
I don't think you can distribute patches against proprietary source-available drivers, since modifying proprietary code is against copyright law.

Apart from the ability to check the GPU health, GPU providers could easily implement some hardware “calculation counter” or design specific solution so resell value could be more easily evaluated.

Why? I saw a good use for this week when journalists used it to purchase a car in war torn Ukraine.
Was that single car worth the energy waste equivalent of a small country? Detonating a nuclear bomb to kill one person isn't exactly a praise for its effectiveness, either.
