Let’s be real here. If you’re only getting angry now, you don’t care about democracy.
You care about your goddamned Bored Apes and other ways of doing end runs around financial controls.
The convoy is anti-democratic. It is not a protest in the conventional sense. They are not petitioning for concerns to be heard; they are asking to be treated as if they were the real government. Many of them have bizarre legal theories and even started to swear each other in as peace officers to justify resisting with deadly force. The end goal of their actions were to get the government to declare itself illegitimate. Hey, I am often skeptical of the state too, but given the convoyers’ aims I would not expect the government to even talk to them.
Be real. This was no protest, and it wasn’t even analogous to an Occupy Wall Street action. A bunch of gullible people who had their brains hollowed out by Q, Facebook and Fox, led by opportunistic white supremacists and at least one literal Nazi, descended on the capital and crucial economic chokepoints to cause mayhem. There were a shocking number of US and Trump flags. In my city, these shitheads scheduled a convoy to pass by every major hospital and disrupt access. The organizers seem to believe doctors and nurses are in on the conspiracy. The hospital workers were advised not to wear scrubs in public lest they be harassed or attacked. I’m happy that Vancouver bicyclists stepped in to block them. But they wandered aimlessly around my neighborhood, and I have friends who’ve been harassed on the street for wearing masks.
It’s very tempting to let the state fuck these assholes up.
But I’ve been involved in a lot of protests and I expect these emergency powers to be used against more admirable causes next.
If you actually care about limiting the powers of the state, the answer is not to clutch your fucking crypto even harder. As already noted, the government can act against financial institutions and laundered coins and assets will be tracked.
Do something useful like donate to civil liberties associations, such as the CCLA, which has taken a stance against abuses of emergency powers and will bring a suit against the Canadian government.
