#3I have read her book and I'm not sure she understands the issue other than it pushes all the right buttons.
Math is not racist or sexist or transphobic.
The training data might be, but we are the training data.
A search engine or AI telling us the the collective we of the internet are should really come as no surprise.
We need to change us before we look for a way to change math.
To be clear, these results are a perhaps uncomfortable reflection of who we are not a failing of AI.

#4I'm sympathetic to the push back she's offering against the idea that algorithms are unbiased because "they're just math", but the evidence of racism and sexism presented in the article doesn't seem convincing to me.

If I search up "black girls", "latina girls", "asian girls" and "white girls" on google, none of them bring up pornography.

#5Oh sweet Lord. If some privileged kid who grew up in Westchester went to a good school and then straight to a FAANG company, does not mean they are automatically an irredeemable monster.
We all know that AI training data, for example, is notoriously skewed toward the perception of the world of a white male, but claiming that this is a conscious malice is quite something. Lack of experience, or understanding of the hardships of others, or even lacking humility, it's a matter of education, explaining, and encouraging personal growth.
The super-woke movement wants us to understand the handicap of poverty, while seeing privilege as a threat. But they are both a handicap.
How many people at Google wake up in the morning and go: "Today I want to be the worst possible version of myself, let's go oppress some women and minorities"?

#6I mean, what percent of people searching "asian girls" are not looking for porn? Im having a hard time thinking of anything else they could be searching for..
I guess they're just handing these genius grants out now? All you have to do is notice that male sexuality can be pretty nasty and also call for censorship of racist stuff?
Maybe she has a genius idea for making a woker search engine that can tell you what to think rather than show you what you want?

It is a natural response to an uncomfortable reflection to blame the mirror. If only I can find the right fun-house mirror, I can forget about this annoying diet. That's akin to limiting Google's AI training data in such a way that it does not assume that the internet is still largely about porn.
We can change Google's search results to reflect less of our racism and misogyny. That would be about as effective at reducing bigotry as the fun-house mirror is at reducing obesity.
