Performance Per Watt matters to Intel except when it doesn't. But really when you have to dissipate so much heat then the chip will be throttled. Apple's ARM chips are only getting started.

Exactly. Apple is not even trying and Intel only just caught up. This year, they will find out that the M2 will set them back another 2 years.

Maybe in terms of raw FLOPS or something, but more importantly it has enormous levels of memory and storage bandwidth, which is what's actually important for most user workloads these days. That's not even accounting for the performance of the GPU cores which can be used for a ton of multimedia workloads.

I've heard this tossed around a lot, but is there any evidence that it's actually true? I struggle to imagine a regular workload that benefits from 32gbps of bandwidth, much less a scenario where the average layman could saturate a 200gbps or 400gbps bus.

3.5%-5% increase in performance at more than double the wattage, for a chip that is not in consumers hands against a chip that basically hasn't changed and was released 14 months ago~ This is not the victory that the title implies. It's also a _little_ bit funny that the i9 laptop was double the price, given people usually rant loudly about how expensive Apple computers are.

Intel know Apple has the ability to strap two M1 Max dies together, right? Right? It's all over the architecture and drivers. It's designed for that. The damn interrupt controller has an unused second half. Rumors are it'll be used on the iMac Pro, but who knows, they can throw it into a 16" laptop if they really want to, it'd still be quieter and lower power than the old Intel MacBooks.

Do that, same wattage, less than twice the price, twice the performance. Now what, Intel?

How is pipeline length related to max frequency?

Physical length the signal has to travel.

Out of curiosity what jobs need a good CPU but also can't take advantage of a good GPU? It seems like most of the high performance numerical computing software today is GPU-accelerated. If performance for your job is super important, why isn't your software GPU-accelerated? I might just be naive but it's honestly hard for me to imagine why anybody would need a good CPU and not also want a good GPU.

Since this is HN... compiling.

Compiling is IO/RAM bound. CPU has impact but not much for most cases.

Still using a Note 8. This phone is awesome. I forget how many years... I would be OK with my M1 Air performing in a similar way.

This is a decent example of what folks are talking about in terms of supported lifespan. Your Note 8 was EOL'd in October 2021. It came out in September of 2017. That's four years of support. My iPhone came out around the same time and Apple is planning to support devices several generations older than mine with iOS 16...

I am very likely to use this phone another three years.

Just saying.

Otherwise, yeah! My wife has an older iPhone still nicely supported, and older than my Note.

My last Mac was a 2012 i7. I used it 6, 7 years? It is still useful, but got coke on keyboard! I fixed it myself last time. Not doing it again.

Sadly, I don't think the M1 family will clock any higher than it's already going. The rumored M1 Max Duo and M1 Max Quadro will have more cores but they'll still trail Intel in single-thread performance (although not enough for most people to notice).

I still maintain the M1 Max Quadro is a figment of media imagination. The M1 Max die is designed for precisely two-die usage. Not four. The IRQ controller has registers for two dies. The drivers reference two dies. The whole thing screams two dies everywhere.

4-die Apple Silicon machines will surely come, but not with the M1 Max die. It'll be a new design.

Overclocking isn't just limited by heat dissipation, and dealing with the additional heat generation is one of the easier issues to overcome. Much more limiting is the fact that the electronic components in the hardware (everything from RAM to the more "integrated" components on the PCBs) have certain amounts of time which they need to take in order to tie voltages high or low, to either read or output a bit. It's not like Apple would ever do it, but the M1 should have heaps of OC headroom. Given that the RAM is already on package, all they need to do is turn up the CPU multiplier.

AMD chips are doing similar clocks to Intel on TSMC N7, so Apple could (but won't) have a chip running way higher than the clocks they are currently shipping with.

Also, it's kinda inaccurate to imply any overclocked setup will crash, there's plenty of room unless they come turned up to the max from stock like the 12900k.
