Honestly this is one of the things I couldn't stand about the bay area. Tons of people that think they're hot stuff and the rest of the country is a dump pile. It reflects in HN comments all the time. The reality is Ohio State is actually a good university and there's really solid talent out there too. You also have Chicago not all that far away that's a big talent hub.

If you substitute "University of California" for "UC", you'll be able to decipher a lot more of them if you know your California cities. For example, "UCSD" translates to "UC San Diego". "CP" gets you "California Polytechnical", but good luck sussing "SLO" unless you've been anywhere near San Luis Obispo.

It is a part of the reason why all the big government contractors are spread out all over the place. Even around a single metro area they'll have different offices in different congressional districts.

If you are on the winning end of that bloat life is pure happiness and joy. But if you are on the losing end (ie. not employed/a beneficiary of these firms) then you are paying dearly for the joy that others have.

I would think a lot of people benefit from the motivation for companies to geographically diversify. A lot of the bad things about the Bay Area boil down to people willing to put up with a whole lot because of a group delusion that a certain kind of thing can only happen there.

The whinging hits everyone. Look at any HN story involving the Bay Area, and you'll see a dozen subthreads about how it's a post-apocalyptic hellscape. (But it's home, you know.)

"Don’t like Ohio? Good we don’t care. You don’t have to live here and we have never needed to care about your opinion"

This tells me all i ever needed to know about Nohio. A worthy state for a tech hub doesn't say this. Instead try:

Don’t like Ohio? What can we do to help? Are you a startup? Can you help us better understand the concern? You don’t have to live here but were sorry we couldnt have done better. We value your opinion.

What's wrong with Ohio? I hear only good stuff from there. I'd love to live there if I was in the states - quiet, reserved and self reliant to a point.

Very. First, any facility that uses reverse osmosis to purify/recycle water is left with concentrated impurities in the form of brine. Second, there are all sorts of nasty chemicals used in chip fabrication.

There are several Superfund sites where chips were once made.
