Retired general warns the U.S. military could lead a coup after 2024 election

There's no coming back from a coup d'etat. What you have afterward is something else. You might call it a restoration of democracy or increment the republic number by one (France) but the cohort of the age now knows how fragile the status quo is. Look at Spain, or Chile for how long it takes to reconcile to the post coup tensions.

"Be careful what you wish for" is strong in this. The US armed forces were torn apart by the civil war, and would be again. Three divisions of control (the space force is a joke) would not align and my guess is somebody rational would lock the pentagon doors (lock them in or out) cut the cables, and change the codebook for missile controls.

Legitimate question if the legally elected government could ask NATO to take control of local US forces outside the continental United States. I am pretty sure Australia would shut down Pine gap for the interim, five eyes would halt, boats in non US harbours would be interdicted, and US bases roped off.
