I don't understand the point of these. Couldn't I get any content from a streaming service via streaming it and screen recording? Does this allow you to download the videos without an account?

You can’t screen record content being delivered over HDCP. Only <= 720p is generally allowed to be streamed without copyright protection.

There is no protected media path on Linux. It always works there.

Which is why you get the 480p/720p low bitrate version instead of the 4K one on Netflix/Disney+.

I'm so fine with 480p

no, it's the motivation, not the reason. the reason why linux users get lower bitrate versions of media is that companies with a bit too much power decided to try to abuse the entirety of the PC world in order to slow the efforts of a very few pirates. it's a stupid untenable unwinnable arms-race that only results in poorer user experience and less and less user-liberty and choice across the board in order to slightl…

drm is not to control piracy but to control legitimate ownership.

And what happened in the VHS days?

You connected the player to another player and copied it.

That typically didn't work very well, as there was crude anti-copying tech in most VHS consumer machines.

Agreed. I often don't get more than this from streaming services, due to bandwidth congestion.

If you try and screenshot or use something like OBS on Windows you just get a black box on top of the media content. Is that not the case using that solution?

HDMI splitter to a capture card solves this as well.

This only works if either the splitter or the capture card removes HDCP, right?

It’s actually to control the manufacturers of legitimate hardware and software involved in playing back media. They know that anyone who wants to can pirate their stuff, and they’re not going to go after them. But legit companies can’t just sell HDMI splitters, capture cards, etc. that strip DRM.
